Does the necron lord still get to "shoot" the staff of light if the upgrade to a warscythe is purchased?

The warscythe does not have a ranged attack in its rules, so no.

Thanks insaniak,I wasn't really sure if the warscythe purchase was in addition to the staff or a "replacement". The codex isn't really clear, at least to me about it.

It's an upgrade to the SoL, so the SoL becomes a Warscythe.

You're certainly not the first to find it unclear, though

The confusion probably stems from the fact that the only other unit with warscythes are pariahs, only theirs have built in gauss blasters.

If you want a shooty lord, give him the staff of light.
If you want a CC lord, give him the warscythe (negates ALL saves, not just armour).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Also for what it's worth, the faq confirms that you lose the shooting attack

And dont forget it ignores ALL saves as previously stated. Ive heard people try and pull the "well yes but I have an inv. save" crap a few times. Its ALL saves.

Really? The Warscythe rule specificially says "including invulnerable saves"....

I have heard this argued as well, since in rulebook i believe it says invulnerable save can always be taken. Which is ridiculous to try and argue that point, but its been tried.

I think that little chestnut came more from older codexes, where some models had saves that were not listed as invulnerable saves, but rather as saves that could 'always' be taken...
