1. Space marines: Space marines are the most generalised force. they're specifically for new players.
2. Orkz. For swampers, intended basically for new-semi-players who want to swamp their enemies.
3. imperial guard intended for medium-level experienced. players who have the intention of using more difficult swarm tactics.
4. Chaos medium for kicking everyone back into their confinments.

Your generalizations fail. Like they always do.

Meh, I find generalization doesn't work.

There are few-model Ork Lists (Nob Bikers), Space Marines are specifically for new players.

And since when did skill level matter when selecting an army?

And yes, it is annoying.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

So playing dark eldar, tau and/or necrons don't fit into there?

Its not particularly hard to learn any army. Learning the 40k RULES - the general rules that apply to everyone is the difficult part.

But I agree - the generalizations don't fit.

Space Marines (and their variants) are average - decent at everything, exceptional at nothing.
Dark Eldar are a glass cannon. Fast, hard-hitting, easily killed.
Orks are customizable into any kind of army list - think of them like ala cart.

Those are the kind of generalizations you can make, but orks are NOT intended for semi-new players who want to swamp their enemies. IG are not....well, I think we know the OP didn't do a very good job. =p

True, those armies require skill, but which army doesn't?

What I'm saying is that someone new to the hobby could still play those armies and learn how they work without having to pick a "starter" army.

I couldn't say that certain armies require a certain level of skill to use them, they only require you to remember special rules where some races have more/different ones to others.

Space Marines are not generalized and allow a good deal of varience and tactics in your lists. They just so happen to have more simpler and fewer special rules that generally make it a good starting army to get into.

Other than that I'd personal put all other races on par with each other as they all have special rules that can take some getting used to and pretty much all armies are able to be made a foot slogging or mechanized force with a good deal of success.

Orks don't have to be a horde of hundreds of minatures to work, Marines don't have to Spam Rhino's and Predators and dreadnoughts to work, etc.

Agreed, Tau have special rules and are still relatively easy to pick up and play, what takes effort is learning how to make your unit choices work well together, something you still need to do as marines that most people DO consider a starting army

Looks like someone lost one too many games to the common armies and couldn't stomach it.

As far as any army, I think it takes time to learn an army no matter your skill level. I have gotten pretty good with Crons and Deamons, and I have fought a lot of marines and I think "jeez if I had their abilities I could win all the time." I tried a few games as a marine player and found out very quickly I didnt know what the hell I was doing. I have not learned that army yet.

I look at local tourneys and some larger ones I have been too and only the most skilled marine players seem to make it to the top. I have a lot of respect for those players because everyone builds an army to fight marines. Sure most build an all comers list, but power armour is the standard for sizing up your opponent. Look at ard boyz, How many marines or MEQ were in the top 10, 2 maybe 3. Marines are a tough army to run.
