Hey there, Back after a few months haitus and giddy to get back into painting.

I'm kind of loathing it at the same time, though. Basecoating all of my miniatures black just takes too long with a brush, I have no local GW store nearby and the place I order from doesn't sell the chaos black spraypaint (I've heard too many horror stories about the stuff anyway)

So, what do you guys do to speed up your basecoating process?

spray paint with chaos undercoat black (the spray paint)

It dries in 1-3 minutes, and it costs $22 AUD

Edit -- foundation paint -$6 ea, they dry in around 30 seconds.
basecoats should be done in the colour closest to your painting style, as this will cover your models in a semi-thick paint.

I use the cheapest possible from hardware store, non-plastic melting black spray. Costs about 5 euros.
Still hasn't failed me yet

ive found a great black spray paint i use to under coat.. its krylon camoflauge paint .. i use the Ultra flat black.. they have olive, black, and tan i believe.. all are ultra flat.. but i love th flatness of the paint.. it coats so quick and dries fast.. ive based a full marine army in the black and a full nid army in the olive color.. i love the paint its like 4 bucks a can

Hm, okay. I think i'll experiment with Krylon Camouflage.

Just curious, has anyone tried watering down paint and dipping models in?

No I have not but my first impression is that it would not be a good idea. The point with
a spray undercoat is that is supposed to be as thin as possible to not ruin detail and to give a
smooth cover to make the painting process easier.

The krylon camo paints are great. I base coated all my orks their brown color. It has given all my ork stuff a good base to build up from. Wonderful paints plus they do not rub off easily but do clean up from skin quickly. They start to get thick when the humidity hits close to 90% but still stays usable when the temps drop below 35 degrees as long as you do not spray for longer than 5 mins at a time and the can is warm.

Wal-mart is the cheapest place to get these paints. Lowes, Home Depot and other DIY stores are at least 1 to 2 USD higher per can. Also, Wal-marts store brand black spray paint which the last time I bought a can was .97 cents and worked well enough. It did get a bit thick when the temps hit around 55 degrees and lower or when the humidity hits above 80%

Runnin up on ya.

I use spray paint like most of the others here; however, if you're wanting to "keep it real" with GW basecoats, get an airbrush, water down the base and go at it.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

I've used the cheapest flat black I can find from Krylon. One can has - so far - based about twice as many models as GW's fancy Chaos Black has. It takes a couple minutes longer to dry but that's no biggie to me, its only about 3 bucks a can.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

I think some of you guys are missing the point about him not really wanting/being able to buy chaos black.

Anyways, I buy cheap stuff from home depot, it costs less thena buck for a can of black and I simply LOVE it. Lays out perfectly smooth, and Ive used the expensive sprays before, and personally the cheap stuff just works better.

But yea, to answer, spray paint is the best alternative to priming minis

It's pretty much the *only* alternative to priming minis, outside of Gessos. Thinning paint down and applying it doesn't work anywhere near as well, and quite frankly doesn't stick as well.

For black base coat the you can not beat the quality and price of the wal-mart base coat. I did use the Army painter spray once and found it way to thick.

I just quit using Krylon because it obscures detail too much for my taste, even with light coats. It often leaves a "bumpy" effect, and I've had it happen in warm weather with no humidity. I didn't notice that it did it for along time, but my painting skill has finally caught up with me to the point where it matters. The Reaper studio painters all swear by Tamiya primer. One of my incredibly skilled friends uses mix-your-own primer and an airbrush.

This one time I went to the FLGS and I purchased some glue and chaos black spraypaint. Ended up at 25 usd, I don't get it, why is the spray paint 15 usd.

I then promptly returned it and got Krylon Spraypaint at a local walmart along with some latex gloves so I could proactively spray the whole model in one go.
