Edit: I've completely finished the Commissar, so I guess the post below these pictures is redundant, but I thought I'd share the results with Dakka, he looks pretty amateurish, my painting wasn't able to completely cover up the nooby use of greenstuff, but I think he'll do in his role as a Custodian for the Psykers in my army.

WIP:

(Regarding the WIP picture) Hopefully this pic shows that it can be done The hardest part was the epaulets in my opinion, the hat was fairly easy, the wrist easy (but you can see how badly it was done) and all I added after those was a thicker lining to the jacket's seam on the right side. The most fiddlesome bit was adjusting the collar (it's elevated and spans around the back of his head, you can only see the front) to make it look symmetrical... but all was done in the end! I look forward to painting this baby

Hey guys,

So I bought some Green Stuff today and I've been dying to try and make a Commissar with a laspistol to use as my Penal Custodian for my Psychic Battle Squad.

Anyhoo, I thought I'd just outline my plan and try get some suggestions from you Dakkaites, and ofc see how feasible it all is.

Hopefully I'll eventually edit the post to include some piccies!

The Plan:

Looking at the availability of parts on my spare Cadian Command Sprue, it seems that the easiest Commissar jacket to emulate is this one:

I figure that this could be

The done-up Officer jacket is very similar to this, it would be a simple matter to add the collar. I can bulk up an Officer hat to be like the Commissar hat easily.

As for the arms, I figure I can file down the shoulderpads and greenstuff some epaulets over the top and add some cuffs onto the ends of the arms.

Details such as the sash should be easy to add, but I'm not sure if I'd trust my skills to make the skulls, I'll probably just add some little buttons.

It's very simple (and hopefully won't require any skill on my part), but I think it should work well!

Any thoughts?

and you could even leave of the high collar and not detract from the desired effect, i think.
sounds like you got a solid plan, so go to it!

I threw a 'how to' together a while ago for a plastic Cadian commissar conversion here:

It might help a bit.

Inso, I actually came accross your guide whilst researching for ideas (and I think it's a very good 'un).

But as a reader of the Ciaphas Cain novels I really must say; it's all about the coat for me!

I've finished the green stuff'ing, it still needs some filing and working on but I've uploaded a WIP photo and added it into the OP.
