Hi,as the title suggests, I have been frequenting here for some time now and I have finally plucked up the courage to post something I've done. I usually paint Dark Angels/Orks for 40k and Orcs for WFB so I have a bit of a green thing going on. I thought why not break it up with some colour so I decided to do some Griffons. I've been out of the hobby for about 12 years so my mini's are all from mid 90's and before, although I am working on adding the new range and I'm slowly learning how to paint again. Let me know what you think and whether they're too bright for todays 40k uni. So bearing in mind that they're currently whereabouts Unknown I have tried to do it battleworn to represent lack of maintenance and lack of supplies. Oh and arms to follow they're just drying.

C&C's welcome...

Here goes...

And...

And...

And...

I will try and get a better camera as mine isn't too good.

Cheers

Both the battle damage and the quartering are really well done, but - like Buttler - I particularly like the way the helmet's turned out.

Oh, and the camera shots look pretty damn good too.

Truly excellent work! I'm really liking the weathering.

The only thing I would suggest is that the center grey part of the belt buckle could use a swipe of highlighting perhaps. Same for the grey part of the ear cover. Can't wait to see the final mini!

Firstly Happy New Year Everyone.

Thanks for the nice comments, and with reference to the highlight on the grey there is one but I could take it higher I suppose. It looks lighter in the flesh. This was painted purely to work out colour scheme and I'm currently working on some darker tones red/yellow as I feel this is a little too Battenburg for me. What do you think?

An outstanding model indeed! I have dabbed in battle damaged marines, but have been able to do substandard jobs at it.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

Looks good to me; I think the battle damage works well. I don't think you necessarily need to go further on the highlights--although if you have the time it's good. I think the red and yellow tones work well, and would not darken them myself, in case a very dark red is lost behind the yellow (and your eye might only be drawn to the brighter regions).

Are you planning to paint/decal on heraldry? The griffon is a tricky one to paint!

Was going to freehand the griffon emblem... been working on small paper atm just need to practise on a shoulder pad or two.

Hey all still practising the freehand griffon... man it's hard work and I just don't like decals. Had a brainfart in the meantime and decided to strip all my DA's and repaint them. My painting style was very early 90's GW so they were kind of bright and as the name suggested I wanted a darker Dark Angel. Let me know what you think?

Fantastic, I much prefer the darker colour schemes. You painting hasn't suffered at all from the lay off, and a I can't wait to see more!

That's a nice looking DA!! Although I really love the griffon color scheme, especially your weathered version of it. So I hope you continue with those

RiT Yeh continuing with the Griffons loved them ever since Freds army in WD. Struggling with the Griffon emblem tho :(

I know you've already said you don't like transfers much, but BoLS does a series of SM Symbols, and I'm sure Howling Griffons are in there. If you continue to struggle, check it out- it'd be a shame to ruin such an incredible paintjob!

@CadianXV I have seen those before but I feel the top leg of the griffon is a bit too fat, I did look at some of the old WFB Empire griffons but I don't have nearly enough of them for the size army I want. The winged dagger on the DA is freehand so I have a fairly steady hand, I just need to practise some more.

Good to see someone else doing the older miniatures, they don't get much love nowadays next to all those plastic shinies :(

I don't think you should tone down the red and yellow quartering too much either, with the weathering I think it looks suitable, though I am in agreement with you on the dark Dark Angels instead of bright. Looking forward to seeing more, am off to hit the Subscribe button now

Been a while I know... read a tutorial on here and thought I'd give it a go... this ork took me about 2 hours start to finish, could easily do a mob per day. Will test with other colours too.

My first go with an airbrush... Still getting the hang of it, quite a steep learning curve tbh I didn't think it would be this hard.

Can you tell what it is yet?

Done a bit more with him today... Can only manage small doses with this guy, he's not fun to paint due to all the bolts and crap all over him. The paintbrush doesn't flow well over the model and because he's so big it seems never ending, plus I keep missing bits. Frustrating as hell to be honest.

Although I've nearly broken the back of it then I can do some fun stuff, like weathering battle damage etc.
