Hello all,

Army Builder – the Point-and-Click Army Construction tool – just released Army Builder 3.2b, a free update for anyone with an active Army Builder license (and also all users licensed for AB 3.2, even if your license has since expired). You can download and install the new release here:

http://wolflair.com/index.php?context=army_builder&page=downloads

Important changes in this release include:

1. Army Builder now respects the Windows "Set custom text size" feature in many of its controls. This means that if you tell Windows to show text at larger sizes than normal, text within Army Builder will now be larger too.
2. Mousing over a unit or item in the Available Units list or Roster tree will now display a tooltip containing information about that unit or item, instead of the general tooltip for the control.
3. If you try to reassign your license before the waiting period is up, a large prompt message now invites you to visit our web site and fill in a simple form to request a reassignment. This should make it easier to submit the required information and have your license reassigned quickly.
4. The minimum resolution checked for is now 800x550, to allow netbooks with very small resolutions to run Army Builder. The "Disable Resolution Check" menu item has been removed.
5. ABCreator no longer outputs some elements that were causing backwards compatability issues with previous versions of Army Builder.
6. Over 20 other bugs fixed - see the c:\ArmyBuilderEX\readme.txt file for more details.

You can download the new release here:

http://wolflair.com/index.php?context=army_builder&page=downloads

*Please note!* If you have problems after installing the new release through the updates mechanism, try downloading it from our web site and installing it manually. Previous releases of Army Builder did not always install new versions correctly through the updates mechanism, but you can fix the problem by simply downloading and running the installer from our web site. (This bug was fixed in v3.2b, so it won't be a problem in future versions.)

Enjoy the new release, and happy new year!

I agree! I loved AB when I was on a PC, now that I am exclusively a MAC person, it is one of the very few things I miss!

When you load an emulator for such occasions. Not trying to be facetious, just saying that if your mac was built in the past four years you have a way around this just fine.

it's a crappy way, though. Parrallels/Fusion are pricey. There's a freeware option or two that might work.

WINE is a possibility. Any idea of WINE compatibility? WINE, of course, is not an emulator.

I don't use AB as I really don't want to have to deal with running some sort of compatibility layer for what could be a pretty light-weight application. For em, the 'cool part' of Army Builder is the back-end that handles list validation and construction rules. The interface is really not that great, in my opinion, and I'd love to see a version that uses the best of both worlds to combine the great 'rules engine' with a light-weight Cocoa-based interface that follows the modern philosophy of being uncomplicated and functional.

Until then, spreadsheets it is!

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

When Mac market share breaks 10% or when they make Army Builder for the Amiga.

True 'nuff. Till then, not worth the development costs.

Probably will never happen as Apple has targeted a niche market.

I'd rather have an iPhone version anyway.

Beaten to the punch, but this would be absolutly amazing as an iPhone app - has there been any thoughts entertained on this?

The main thing is one makes the other significantly easier. Mac OS apps are generally written in 'Cocoa', an environment that has components for UI elements, etc. Native iPhone apps use 'Cocoa Touch' which is a version of this. Both are based on Objective-C... So, basically, if the developers decide to do a true iPhone version, doing a Mac version would probably be relatively easy.

I wouldn't expect this kind of thing to eb done until version 4, though, as it's not as easy as it may sound.

It may not be easy to develop, or quick to push through the Apple approval process, but an Army Builder app for iPod/Phone would be fantastic and I know a ton of people who would buy it (myself included). Not expecting this any time soon, and definitely happy with the product AB continues to produce.

They used to have a program that worked on Palm, but I guess they got rid of it. An iPhone app would be a valid product for them to work on.

It's worth the effort.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

While I would love an iPhone app, how would you handle the Data Files for it? You can't put the codex information right into the program, and you certainly can't charge for it, so I don't think it would be really possible for the iPhone unfortunately.

I use it on my Mac, through Parallels. It's fine.

It's about the only PC program I use, so partitioning for Boot Camp and rebooting each time is too much hassle.
