Cool pics. I really like that UM captain (although that "cherub" looks a bit creepy, like a plumber in a diaper )
Hey Kyoto, since you're probably the closest one there, could you please fly over to China and apply your foot repeatedly and enthusiastically to the photographer's junk? I would like to have seen the whole dreadnought.

I just want to know why the hell I wasn't aware of this until it appeared on GW's site! If they start doing decent tournaments and such I will be thrilled.

Golden 'Demon' would be a controversial name in China then?

I think it's just that "dragon" fits the oriental theme better. Remember that the dragon in Chinese culture is a symbol of authority and power. Very good for GW's image I imagine.

Given that the state in China is verymuch involved in what it's populace is and isn't allowed to be exposed to, whether the word 'demon' would be considered too controversial, given things like China's insistence on Blizzard removing all skeletons from WoW (although I heard they banned WoW altogether recently).
It was strongly hinted at that the diaz daemonettes with ze big boobies were removed from GWs line due to potential trouble with the recent opening GW stores in China, who didn't want to risk a party rep reporting them and GW getting booted out.
So I wondered if they changed the name from Demon to avoid any potential trouble from the 'benevolent and protective' Chinese government.
Lukas' explanation of the dragon though, does make better sense.

There is nothing wrong with the name "Golden Demon" in china ,in fact people there may want the same name with other countries instead of the new name, that way it doesnt look like GW treat them "differently" ,but I understand the consideration of GW ,as right now the quantity and quality of the models is not the same level compare to GDs in europe.

GW does not own stores in China or have staff on the ground (barring manufacturing). They do have an exclusive distributor and the head of their international markets buzzes through every few months.
In Beijing there were no stores carrying GW stuff in 2006 but 3 or 4 by the time I left in 2009. There were 2 shops in Shanghai and growing online sales.
Modeling in general (military, sci-fi etc) has been growing in China, there were at least 2 big shopping areas specializing in model shops.
My guess would be this was a privately-run event that could not use the Golden Demon name. GW obviously had some participation but since they did not own it they went with Golden Dragon.
Anyway quite happy to see this, hopefully I'll be able to get a game when/if I go back.

The hobby business has been running for more than 20years in china, now we have brand like Trumpeter, which is one of the biggest scale model companies in the world, only the wargame things are relative new and indeed growing fast in china, thanks to the new generations of people, who grew up with cartoons and video games.

还有在香港和台湾很多人喜欢。
For GW stuff a lot of the players I met had come in through Dawn of War, seeing the game in the UK, Canada or US or were expats. Two of the shops in Beijing were run by British ex-pats, one by a Chinese guy. And of course in Hong Kong and Taiwan modeling. sci-fi and general geek culture are well-established.
Hopefully the PRC won't pull some of the moves they pulled with Warcraft to encourage home-grown games.

I will say the wargames are only small potatoes for their taste ,that they dont even know about it so far ,as the WoW is totally different which cause social problem to us

No realationship with political reasons.
The reason why it did not carry a "Gold deamon" name, is because it is not "totally offical".

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |
