situation:
Bold is my opponent, italics is mine.
"I will Rapid fire my bolter into the assault."
"You can't."
"Why"
"RF can't assault, if they fire."
"bull"
-shows rules, explains that he has to fire his bolt pistol instead.-
"That's wrong"
it's the RULEbook, how can't it be right?
General continual argument.
Eventually I assaumed I couldn't show him reason and gaveup, in resignation.
what should I do? this was a 'friendly' game.

Take him aside after the match if you are friends and explain to him why. Else... dunno.

If, after being shown the rule that states you cannot assault after firing Rapid Fire weapons your opponent doesnt believe you - dont play them again, or get someone else to confirm what you are saying.

Ask him if you guys are playing by the rules or making a house rule.
If it's a house rule, it should be discussed before the game so both parties can equally gain/lose from it.
But mid game, that's just not following a very basic rule of the game.
If they continue to argue over it, just continue...knowing this guy is not going by the rules and just get it over with, or just stop playing the guy.
Seriously, it's a waste of your time if they guy is being an idiot, you can't 'get back time,' spent explaining a black and white rule that's dismissed as 'wrong'.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Wait a moment. He said fire into the assault? Was there close combat he was shooting into? Or did he want to shoot the bolters and then assault? The first is just plain wrong.
Otherwise, I'd do what you did and if after being shown the rules he decides the rules are wrong, I guess I'd pack up as we weren't playing the same game. I would be playing 40k, he'd playing some version of Calvin-Ball.

If you are going to give up and let him do it, then you start doing the same and call it a "house rule".
Then start moving units and firing heavy weapons. See how he likes rule bending then.
Or, as others have said, just stop playing against him or get a member of GW staff to back you up on the ruling.

Solon, are your and your opponents just starting to play 40K? I get that impression.
Does everyone you play against not have access to the rulebook? You seem to be very unfortunate with the amount of 'douches' you play against.

He may be thinking of the old rules where you could. Tell him he may fire bolt PISTOLS if he wants then assault. (Assuming SM/CSM because you said bolters) but that he may not fire two shots. However if he thinks the rule book is wrong then try this:
Roll a D6, on a roll of 2+ you win the game. You may reroll infinite times.
When he asks where that is in the rulebook tell him "Well, it isn't BUT. . . clearly the rulebook is wrong"

I have walked away from exactly one game while it was being played.
It involved something similar to this, and then a few more things that were not. e.g. complaining that I was TFG for asking if models that were 100% hidden behind a wall had LOS needed for shooting.
If following the rules that were agreed to prior to the game is too much, so is finishing the game.
(If no changes are agreed to, then the rules in the book are all the game should use)
YMMV

Open a third edition rulebook and tell him he can only fire one shot up to 12 if he moved
|
-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |
