I am making an ork footslogging list for 1500 points and was wondering what is a ideal number of ork boyz to take. (please do not answer with as many as you can as that does not leave room for other specialty units and its just not a very good answer...)

I have heard a lot of people say two squads of 30 and then one squad of around 20-22.

How many boyz do you take? (troops) and how do you protect them?

A: As many as you can fit into your list...
B: Mobz of 30 over 20... 30 Grots cost the same as a mob of 20 and soak up wounds nicely...

Battlewagons are good, as are Kan walls...

Kustom Force Field from a Big Mek makes the above even better.

I have to admit, I miss the old Infantry battles of 4E compared to this 5E wonderland of APCs/IFVs everywhere. It's like we jumped from WWI to WWII.

You know, at 1500 pts you can easily fit 3 full mobs of shoota boyz and a 30-strong mob of gretchin (some people like to play with the numbers of gretchin to minimize runtherds). A full mob of boyz + nob with customary BP and PK only sets you back 220 pts.

My 1000 pts footslogger list has 2 full mobs of shootaz and 1 full mob of gretchin. It's no problem spreading the grots out to cover da boyz.

There's a theory going that 30 'ard boyz with Mad Dok Grotsnik would be a damn fine shield unit - 4+ save and FNP means wounds from most antiinfantry shots bounce off 3 out of 4 times. But expensive!

Also: I've had no luck with fielding only one or two BWs. With orkz you need spam! Either go mech with 2 BWs and the rest of the Boyz in Trukkz, or go green tide or go Kan Wall. Never really saw Kan Wall in action, but it looks real good on paper. Mech and green tide I know are good, at least at these point levels. Once you go above 1850 pts. horde armies tend to get difficult...

29 Boyz and a Nob with a Power Klaw. But, only 29 because a Boy has to upgrade to the Nob.

Just did the math - 30 'ard boyz with Grotsnik sets you back a hefty 460 pts without a PK nob (since Grotsnik has a PK already). Too expensive at 1500 pts IMO.

That really depends on the kind of army that you're building. To use a cooking analogy, you've just asked, "How many fruits should I put into this 12" pie?" You haven't told us what kind of fruit, the toppings you like, or who's going to get it.

By the same token, your question cannot be answered without knowing what kind of army you want to play. And so I give you this instead: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/269441.page#1180405

Read that, and then come back with "I want to build a ______ Ork army." We'll take it from there.

Sorry for being unclear

"I want to build a footslogging list combined with stormboyz and nob bikers for early assault ork army" lol XD

But seriously, I want it to consist of a squad of stormboyz (preferably a full squad), 5 nob bikers (around 400 points) and Snik with 10 kommandos (215)

Basically i want the stormboyz and nobs to move up quickly to get some gunz off my footslogging boyz but with that said, i do not know how to protect them or how many i should take so when they finally get there, there is still enough of them to wreak havoc.

I have never played with or against orks so i have no idea how effective footslogging is. I want to know how many boyz it takes to get across the board and how to best protect them without having the shields to consume so many points.

p.s. Not to fond of vehicles due to painting and transporting them around but if it really comes down to it, ill use them

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Nob Bikers and Snikrot and friends are pretty expensive units to be using as a draw-fire for your regular boyz...

Well thats kind of how it works. Opponent either shoots at horde of boyz or elite units. Either way, one side is somewhat preserved. I made a list.

Looks like-

Biker Warboss- Kombi Skorcha, Big Chop, Cybork-120

Big Mek-KFF

30 Shoota boyz- Nob with things-220

30 Shoota boyz- Nob with things-220

25 Shoota boyz- Nob with things-160

15 Grots+Runtherd-55

20 Stormboyz-Nob with BP and Big Choppa-260

5 Nob bikers
1 Painboy
1 Big Choppa
1 Power Klaw
1 Waaagh! Banner
1 Bosspole
All with cybork armour and 4 skorchas except painboy
-350

Total-1500

Thoughts?

I have no idea if footslogging works. I have never played orks and do not see how they can stay intact on such a large board for the opponent to run around

Footslogging can work quite well for orks, but it's usually of the green tide variety. Nob bikers and stormboyz aren't typically considered footslogging units,
and as such it's a mixing of army types which numerous people will yell at you for.

The one comment about your list is that the warboss and Nob in the stormboyz unit most certainly should have a PK. Do whatever you must to your list to get those in.
If the biker boss is going to attach to the squad of stormboyz, then you can probably get off with just one (should be the warboss).

You must understand that for an ork a day that starts off killing something with your bare hands, and ends with those same hands being chopped off in battle, is a good one.

What's betta than one choppa? Two choppas!!! Two choppas is one more than...is one times da...IS LOTS MORE FUN!! WAAAAGH!!!

I like units of 20 boys, means more Nobz with PK.
A unit of 20 allows me more squads to split up to take objectives or to support other units. More sensitve to templets, just cant afford to lose to many boys.
i would much rather have 3 20-man squads then 2 30-man squads (and yes i know there is a price difference).
more squads more options, more PK nobz, and makes other player have to split up shots. with more units you can cover more ground, out flank, or help corner fast moving units.

I was thinking about that but the stormboyz are expensive as it is and are just there to zoom up and get some weaker cc units into combat.

The boss goes by himself which is why i decided to cut out the power klaw as he might get killed with only initiative 1
