Hi all,

This is my Lone Wolf model.

I tried to have a story for this model inline with the codex - As the last of his squad alive, he is ready to die a glorious death in battle and so is screaming defiance at his enemies and has wolf-claws outstretched as he begins his last charge.

He has totems/skulls/fangs etc across his armour as momentos of his fallen battle-brothers and has their names scribed on his right shoulderguard. On his right shoulderguard I also tried to paint a picture of a single wolf on the snow fields of Fenris howling at the moon (that was the idea anyway, but it's a bit small and a bit blurry).

His armour is suitably battered and scarred from all the battles he has fought and survived. It's also a bit dirty looking in parts.

I tried to do a scar across his face as another sign of tough fights,

I probably overdid the battle damage on the armour, but wanted a really 'weathered' look.

Looking to touch it up and tidy it in places following any advice.

I played him against a Tyranid army and he managed to take out several hormaguants, termagaunts and after making many saves finally fell when a group of Gargoyles joined the fray.

Thanks for looking,
Cheers.

pics don't work :(

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

I like it. The howling wolf on the shoulder pad may be a bit blurry, but is still impressive. The totems and the script on his armour really go with the storyline behind him, and I like the amount of battle damage he has sustained. Goes well with the "last mand standing" motif. I am rather curious why most of the damage is on his back, though. It might just be that I can't see it on the front...
Anyway, really cool model.

There might be too much battle damage but you did such a great job with it that I can't really complain.
I second a better picture of the freehand shoulder.

nicely done - i especially like what you did with the claws - that effect - did you follow the "oxidized metal / rust" technique but with a blue color???

The only thing missing is a tattered cape.

I don't think theres too much battle damage though it does look a little odd because its all moving in the same direction.

I love the idea of having a story behinds the interesting models and even units in an army. My lone wolf is partly based on odin. Wodan the Traveller. And i've used the head with the eye-patch.

Hi all,

Thanks for your comments

In answer to questions -

Tried taking another pic of shoulderguard but using my camera phone it can't zoom well enough to get the detail any better than it appears in the pic above, might need to use a different camera.

To Grimm - Yeah, they're pretty neat - Eternal Warrior, Saga of the Beastslayer and a choice of weapons/termy armour and don't concede a kill point when they die - mine as pictured was about 70 points to field I think.

To Thediffidentone - In answer to the majority of damage being on the back - My Wife said ''It was because he was running away, haha!'' - she just doesn't understand
I tried to put plenty of damage on the front too, but I think because the back has less trinkets and things there was more room to put damage on. I agree that it does look a bit one directional - I'll assume it was from a Hive tyrants claws

To Ironking - For the claws I followed the guide in.. I think Oct '09 White Dwarf - using 50/50 chaos black/Ice Blue, then moving up towards the end of the claws I added more Ice blue to the mix and heavily drybrushed it on. toward the end of the claws it was pure ice blue and then eventually a very little skull white was added.

Thanks again for comments,
Cheers

Very impressive painting, I'd like to see a clearer pic of the wolf though! The pose is also superb and you've got a great balance with the amount of totems you've used.

Well done!

The battle damage look great to me! Even though it's all going the same directon, it could like a flowing horde of 'Nids scratched him up. Rippers or hormagaunts or something.
Great posing and paintjob too!

Hi, thanks for the comments chaps

To Ronin - For the armour I base coated shadow grey, then 50/50 mix of shadow grey/space wolves grey and washed Devlan Mud into the recesses. The claws - I used Ice Blue, the red on it is Red Gore. The gold is undercoated scorched brown then 50/50 scorched brown/shining gold, then highlighted with shining gold.
The skulls and fangs I use scorched brown then vomit brown, then bleached bone and a very little skull white right at the ends.

To Ghosty - For the battle damage I used Shadow-grey (base coat used) then under-lined the shadow-grey damage with space wolves grey (borrowed this technique from October '09 White Dwarf master class article - I use a lot of techniques fromt hat article for my wolves ) and for more weathering I let the Devlan Mud armour wash come out of the recesses in parts.

Thanks again for the comments

"It was because he was running away, haha" - Nun's! reverse!

haha, nice job mate his paintjob fits his heroic tale, this particular lone wolf fended off an entire 20 man brood of termigaunts, then a 10 man brood of hormigaunts and was only finished off when a brood of gargoyles swooped to overwhelm him. he just couldn't fail a save!

just hope i'm not on the recieving end of his claws WHEN?? we have our next battle

Other than the use of Devlan Mud (which I approve), your recipe is pretty much the same as GW's method of painting SW, except yours doesnt look nearly as baby blue as theirs. I like it
With the 50:50 mix of shadow grey/space wolves grey, did you mean you just highlighted with it, or did you layer it over the shadow grey basecoat?

Hi Ronin.

I just painted it over the shadow grey in 1 layer, then retouched if necessary. I've mixed the two colours in a pot, with a little water, the mix may be slightly more skewed than 50/50 but it's what I aimed for, I agree it doesn't look quite the same as GWs, maybe there is slightly more shadow grey.

Cheers

Why is there a patch of grass growing on the top of your Vindicator ?

Seriously, though, I think your Lone Wolf looks great !! I haven't done one yet but I'll definitely use yours as a reference. The battle damage separates it from the rank-n-file troops. Nicely done !!
