I just got Dow2 for Christmas and I was quite dissapointed with it
1. The damn Windows Live server kept crashing and would show me a 404 error. Finally, at two in the morning I was able to create a windows live account.
Then it showed me an error message and I had to reboot my computer again for the fething game to work
2. The missing of skirmish mode
3. I missed the "epicness" of DoW. I found the squad based missions quite boring

So what was your take on this game?

I enjoyed it, but you definitely have a good point. Windows Live kinda well, sucks. I'm constantly having connection issues (Which I have with not a single other game I own) and I can rarely get into a decent game with my pals.

As for the game itself, my answer is a resounding meh. I enjoyed the squad combat to a certain degree, but I think I had more fun playing the first DoW games. I definitely agree that DoW2 lost much of the 'epicness' of huge-scale battles, and the loss of the Risk-style gameplay was kind of disappointing. I really think that Soulstorm and Dark Crusade could have been better given some variety between territories, maybe throw in some random effects or give some varying objectives for each area. DoW2 kind of fixed that problem, but there was still no way to take territories and hold them, it's just the four squads traveling between three planets and taking down threats.

I liked the 1st one when it actually felt like a "war"

now the small units feels like "dawn of skirmish"

I didn't like dow2. I prefer the base building/resource gathering of the originals

I loved it. It plays the way Marines should. Small, flexible, and incredibly reliant on combined arms.

I like it a lot. Really fun game. One of my proffessors worked at Relic for a while, although I don't know if he worked on any of the DoW games...

Really though, my only big complaint with the game is that the University's connection blocks it, so I can't really play it anymore.

Learning to play multiplayer is fething hard, but it's a fun game even when you're losing, so long as you can put up a fight.

Funnily enough, I played DOW2 at a friends house ever before getting DOW1. I loved it, and it was definitely made for Multi-player. Rough storyline though.

EDIT: Feth this post. Sorry, I was think Modern Warfare 2 for some reason. *facepalm*

BTW, DOW2 wasn't my cup of tea.

I like the lack of base building. It felt tacked onto 40k in DoW(1), an annoying legacy from other games that it grew from.

I am biased by the inclusion of Tyranids, and they are fun and my only tabletop army.

Multi-player versus AI = skirmish. Add people as you will -- it is not required.

The Last Stand is pretty fun. I am excited to see Tyranids added to playable characters for it, though. (And genestealers to the rest of the game!)

It was...alright. It was fun just mowing down waves of Orks with firepower in campaign I suppose. But....I couldn't find a race I liked playing as, The learning curve for multiplayer was very steep, and there wasn't enough variety in the campaign missions (heck, the maps were all basically one of two layouts with a different skin on each time)

Overall, 6/10. Chaos rising should make an 8.5/10 though .

Locclo pretty much put into a nutshell, I miss the epicness (especially the exaggerated armies mod for SS, hundreds of guardsmen har har) and he is right with the boring landscape wich barely changes and has practically no effect on the game because it is possible to shoot through the walls.

Winter Assault was best game for an IG player because there was no restricition on the Kaskrin/Ogryn units.

Well, maybe I'll be stoned but I like it much more than DoW (1). Gathering resources and constructing buildings really didn't make it for me and I'm glad that is over (at least for the single player).

In fact I wish for a turn-based 40k video game, but that's probably impossible with current trends in "strategy" games :(

Theres too much running away! Theres no variety in units used. The learning curve is steep as hell for multi. The game feels unrewarding to even bother mastering. Point captured, point lost, chase the eldar with the orks.. they have the advantage they chase you its like two children chasing each other around a tree. SP is only Marines! Practically worthless and tedious. Finally there is no chaos. And the Chaos is watered down and uninspired from what Ive seen what of tzeentch slaanesh? No guard! Not enough races period!

Also the highly irritating and gak steam!

I enjoyed the hell out of last stand but thats old hat now.

Previously I was in denial about this game but its as useful for entertainment as Possessed are for WAAC tourney list.
