Ridin' on a Snotling Pump Wagon
|
So I'm sitting here, waiting for a phonecall from my lovely Parents where I hope to tap them up for £60, to help facilitate a quicker issuing of my Taxi Driving License, thus allowing me to get a) back on the road and b) earning full time money again, leading to c) me being able to move in with my friends when they leave their current digs.
And it made me wonder if any other Dakkites find themselves, cap in hand before their parents, looking for a little financial liquidity to help them along. For good or ill, it's something of a tradition in my family. Good when it gets paid back (Bro and I are good at that) and ill when your Uncle runs the family business into the ground, leaving your aged Grandparents with a £78k debt, which said Uncle then offers to pay, if he gains control of the nice big building (easily worth in excess of £1,000,000) in return.
So do you Dakka? Ever had your Parents help you out of a tight spot, enable a dream to come true etc? Certainly, I much prefer to deal with Mum and Dad than the greedy bankers!

Lol yeah I've been living with my parents since september, because Me and my GF lost our jobs and our apartment so we had to go crawling back to mommy and daddy. I've decided that the only appropriate way to repay my parents for all of their help is to take my dad on an international hunting expedition someday, and I'll probably take care of my mum when shes old. I'd be totally screwed if my parents didn't help me like they do. So yeah I guess I have a mortgage with the bank of mom and pops now.

Sorry cant say that I have. Both of my parents are dead and were to poor to help any ways. Guess thats why I am an uncaring prick. Only person thats going to help me is me. Glad to hear others have better options though. Best of luck.

I think pretty much everyone does at some point. My mom paid for a new transmission for my car 2 months after I moved to california since I couldn't afford it. My cousins both have had apartments and cars, pretty much all funded by my aunt and uncle. They're both in their 30's and still living at home.
Just remember what your parents did for you when you eventually have kids too

The last they helped me was when I was in university 2 years ago. Since then I've had a solid job, though I'm still stuck at home paying rent (thank you crappy housing market). Though once my woman is through her finals, she's going to start looking for work so we can finally have enough money to get out on our own. Hard to afford a place when the average rent here eats up all but $25 bucks of your paycheque

'Never a borrower or lender' is a good way to go regarding family and money. Lending a few hundred bucks because they're in a tight spot and an emergency comes up? That's fine. $10K for a business load? That's what banks are for (at least, approaching that example in a vacuum). I know I could get a helping hand if I asked for it, but I make it a point to try not need one.

I look for advice, not money. Advice is something to always take, whereas money is something that must be repaid.
The day I graduated college, but before I got my own job, I paid my parents rent. It was cheap, but it made sense. It wasn't long before I moved out and got a job. If tragedy befell me, I am more than sure they would help me out, but I would try to be independent first.

It's been over 20 years since I've asked either of my parents for much of anything.
The last time was borrowing $200 dollars from my Mother to do some repairs to my car (I was 18 at the time),which I paid back a few weeks later.
Basicly I've supported myself since turning 17,and since my Mom passed away 2 years ago and my Father and I havn't spoken in over a year, I don't really have a "bank of Mom & Dad".

Hmm, lets see.
My parents threw me out when I was 17, decided "crap we needed his rent money" and took me back (under duress, but I was homeless so meh).
I then decide to be a nice guy and over the course of the next few years end up being owed about €600.
Then I realise being nice is for idiots, ask for the money back, and then I become homeless again!
My parents are just swell!

I think the biggest thing that my parents have helped me with were paying for my first semester of college, as well as cashing an old savings account to pay for the second. It's been really helpful since I can't seem to find a job (What a surprise, most business aren't currently looking for an inexperienced student just out of high school...). I'm hoping to one day pay them back, but it's hard going without a job.

I started working at 13, and haven't stopped since. My parents were never really financially able to do much, and since becoming an adult I've asked Dad for maybe $200 for car insurance. OTOH two younger sisters, and my mother have all taken out loans with the "fiscally responsible brother/son bank." Something about the women in my family... or maybe women in general? *ducks*

I am in a position where I am not in need of money from anyone who should not be giving it to me, anyway (my employer).
I come from a tight knit family, however. I see my 3 brothers, their families & my parents almost every Friday night when we all get together and go to my parents house. I know that, if I ever needed it, they'd bend over backwards for me.
Six years ago, my wife and I left our jobs in VA, sold our home and moved back here to be closer to the family. For 4 months while we established our employment and looked for our own house, we (and our 2 youngest kids) stayed in my parents basement. Of course, we helped with groceries and the like (parents wouldn't take rent).
My parents have always been there for me and, even now, help me out in immeasurable NON monetary ways. If I ever need someone to pick up my youngest daughter for something, or to get my grand daughter (who we're raising) from day care, I know my parents will go out of their way to help.
Those of us who have close families like this should not forget to appreciate them.

I'm back at my parents place now due to some pretty gak employment and housing decisions which I'm not too happy about, but hey it beats being on the streets. They've helped me out with trainfare before my first paycheque came in, and I intend to give them a fair amount of an insurance pay-out I'm due.
I'm not chuffed at having to rely on my parents at the moment, but I'm not one for not paying back debt.

It could always be worse You could be living in Detroit or something. IIRC, Joe Louis Arena (Red Wings home ice) sold for a mere $250,000 US. That's about 25K less than your average 30 year old 3br 2br Family house here in town. Hell a brand new house here sells for at least $350,000
Just to give an idea as to how much everyone is hurting right now :(
