NOTHING GOTH!!!!!!!!
-to many points to bother to count.

Most mainstream metal is not gothic or devil worship.
Slipknot/NiN/Megadeth.

I prefer Non Metals, particularly the Nobel Gasses, but that's just me I guess, though I have been known to cavort with certain metalloids now and again (That means You Silicon!)
And I do indeed suggest Dethklok. While it may be a completely over the top satire of what true metal is, it's bloody brilliant in its own right. It's also epic brutal!!!!!!

Damn right Viking Metal is cool. If the Vikings had known of Metal, they would have had a god for it, and he would have been so bad-ass that even Odin would be like "damn that guy's awesome!"

Also, look into Iced Earth. Really great band. Horror Show is a good album, every song based on different horror movies. Damien is my favorite off this and all time favorite IE song, based on The Omen. The Glorious Burden is great if you're into US history and features Tim Owens (judas priest stand-in for a while) on vocals. Their Gettysburg 3 parter is awesome. Their next 2 albums are a 2 part concept album series called Something Wicked which takes a lot of biblical history stuff and gives it a sci-fi spin. Some really great tracks on both. And if you're into comics, ya can't go wrong with the dark saga which is all based on the Spawn comics
Blind Guardian is also a great band with a lot of their stuff based on fantasy stories and lord of the rings. Demons & Wizards is a side project for BG and IE with both bands mixed together

Metal is a very diverse music genre so that brings up some problems for recommending stuff. That said, I'll list some subgenres and "classic" bands & albums for you (some of which are just my personal favs). If you want to steer away from anti-christian themes, you can avoid the black metal subgenre, altough It's worth noticing that even black metal bands rarely try to "turn" people into dark side. They are often more about telling twisted stories and creating creepy atmospheres like, say, horror movies. These are just rough groupings, though. One of the downsides of metal discussion over internet is the abundance of genre policing but hopefully we'll avoid that here.
Trash & Speed Metal
Artillery - When Death Comes
Kreator - Violent Revolution
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Metallica - Ride the Lightning (please stay away from nineties/2k metallica, the old was 100x better )
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Sodom - Agent Orange
Testament - The Gathering
Death Metal & Grindcore (Pretty much the most aggressive stuff. Growly singing incorporated, so if you absolutely hate that, well...)
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
Cannibal Corpse - Bloodthirst
Carcass - Heartwork
Death - Symbolic
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Origin - Antithesis
Vader - Litany
Melodic Death Metal (Mostly growly vocals as in the above, but a with more melodic as the name implies)
Amon Amarth - Versus The World
Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes
Amorphis - Eclipse
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Dark Tranquility - The Gallery
Entombed - Wolverine Blues
In Flames - The Jester Race
In Flames - Clayman
Insomnium - Across the Dark
Opeth - Still Life
Soilwork - The Chainheart Machine
Power Metal & Heavy Metal
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (oooldie, but goodie)
Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond
Blind Guardian - Imaginations From the Other Side
Dio - Holy Diver
Dragonforce - Ultra Beatdown
Gamma Ray - Somewhere Out In Space
Gamma Ray - No World Order
Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave
Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys
Heavenly - Virus
Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider
Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast (no, it's not devil worshipping, trust me )
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Jag Panzer - Mechanized Warfare
Judas Priest - Stained Class
Kamelot - Karma
Kamelot - Epica
Manowar - Louder Than Hell
Manowar - The Triumph of Steel
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Nightwish - Wishmaster
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Rhapsody - Power of the Dragonflame
Running Wild - Death or Glory
Sentenced - Down
Stratovarius - Visions
Sonata Arctica - Reckoning Night
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Hybrid Metal (just bands that mix stuff from many genres, such as trashlike riffing and growly death metal vocals in addition) & Other stuff (sludge, doom etc)
Bal-Sagoth - Starfire Burning Upon The Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule (I kid you not...)
Childern of Bodom - Follow The Reaper
Ensiferum - Iron
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Ministry - Rio Grande Blood
Moonsorrow - Voimasta ja Kunniasta (the lyrics are finnish, but this is good stuff nevertheless )
Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
Skyclad - Vintage Whine
Turisas - The Varangian Way
Wintersun - Wintersun

Of course if you actually play IN the band the TTW is instantly forgiven

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

I don't heckle bands, mainly because people in bands tend not to. Wait... do you mean strolling up to a group of metallers and telling them Dragonforce are a load of spank? That wouldn't bother me in the slightest - but who DOES that?
I actually quite LIKE metal - just not as much as I like teasing metal fans. They always seem to take themselves so seriously...

Oh, agreed. That's my defence, and I'm sticking to it like white on rice!

Funny thing here. I started listening to metal because I played the game to that trailer. My older brother was so happy about me starting to like metal.
There are two bands I enjoy mostly: Dragonforce and Freedom Call. They make Metal and have fun doing so. Freedom Call even sounds happy when they sing about "endless agony". It's a blast, you should give those a shot. Manowar is nice in an ironic retro sort of way.

Dude, you really need to play Brütal Legend.

Also known as the ultimate badass templar knight riding a dragon while flaming angels drop from the sky and kill demons all over the place, then vampire-zombie-athiests attack the Templar! but he played warhammer 40k so much he became a tactical genius so he totally outflanks and kills the zombie-vampire-athiests with his awesome fire sword! Then because he's so FETHING METAL, he eats their hearts, and lightning shoots everywhere and hot naked valkyrie chicks riding pegusai fly around! Then a giant demon-godzilla-dragon thingy with like a hundred faces attacks him with nuclear megalasers! But Because the badass Templar is so faithful, God kills The giant godzilla thing with lightning and aids!!!!
There, fixed that for ya.
Actually thats part of the script for a movie I'm writing, don't steal it.
@OP I believe you are looking for a band known as "Venom". If you can't find any of their uplifting compositions, there is always W.A.S.P. Slayer's Haunting the Chapel is another good CD. Great Sunday morning music.
White flag. Joking. Joking.
But metal that isn't about Wizards, Devils, Chicks, Cars, Violence, Monsters, Warriors, etc is just krap ( the "K" stands for "kwality"). Bands that were considered "Metal", that avoided most of these topics include Stryper, Slaughter, Nelson, Extreme, Poison, Cinderella, Warrant, Winger. They all suck.
The band you NEED TO LISTEN TO is Black Sabbath.
@ Albatross Re: the Virginity Trinity
That has to be the most astute observation in the OT forum in a long time. Well done.
