How large are they.Gothic's Battlefleet was able to fight chaos fleets for eight years until the Eldar arrived.I think that depends on the sector's industrial capacity. In dark heresy Battlefleet Calixis is repaired by some corporation not Mechaniucs, does anyone find this strange.

Well, the entire Damiocles Gulf Crusade was made up of about 5 IN capital ships and about 3-4 SM strike cruisers.

Pretty small, all told. I would say about one battle ship, two battle cruisers and about 5-10 cruisers. These are just just guesses, however.

Battlefleet Gothic was much larger than that I think that it numbered dozens of ships.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

From the BBB page 86.

A typical sector battlefleet consists of 50-75 warships (destroyer or above). Plus 'countless' smaller ships such as couriers, patrol craft and transports, in addition to 'numerous' non warp travel system ships such as monitors.

This does not include the civilian fleet.

So at a guess for a typical sector fleet:

3 Battleships
12 Cruisers
9 Light Cruisers (3 squadrons)
15 Frigates (5 squadrons)
12 Destroyers (3 squadrons)

100+ Long range patrol corvettes

10 Fleet oilers
10 Fleet transports
10 Couriers
10 Tugs/Repair tenders

plus lots of warp capable small craft.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

That's a great force.I think also that imperial ships don't take decades of years to be finished,IIRC on some feral world a Lunar-class cruiser was constructed in 11 years and imagine a cruiser constructed at some forge world.

Yeah, they're constructed pretty quickly I think. Think about it: some Forge Worlds construct hundreds of big ships at a time!!!!

Hello Guardsmen, look at your Leman, now back to mine, now back to your Leman, now back to mine. Sadly, your Leman isn't mine, but if they stopped using standard engines and switched to Lucifer Pattern, they could move like they're mine. Look down, back up. Where are you? Your in a battlefield with the Rhino your Leman could move like. Whats in your hand, back at me, I have it, it's the fire control for the Twin-linked Assault Cannons aimed at you. Look again, it's a Deep-Striked Land-Raider. Anything is possible when your Tanks move like Blood Angels, and not like Guardsmen. I'm on a Baneblade.

Is GW contradicting it self when they say that the ships take generations to construct when feral world could construct a 2km vessel(how big are cruisers,I'm not sure because of different sources) in eleven years.
Can anyone give me sizes of 40k ships,I've seen some pictures, but I'm not sure if they are correct.

Gentlemen, BEHOLD!

Don'cha just love the eagle bigger than the Empire State Building?

Don't forget that it is theorized that a 1KM asteroid would end all human life on the planet. Bring that up the next time you see a crashed cruiser on a table... that isn't bigger than the table.

I've seen that pic before, but from what I hear largest imperial ships are 18km and we have some Adeptus Mechanicus 16km long heavy transport vessel.

Yes, there are bigger ships, super-heavy cargo haulers and the like, just not dedicated warships. For there being only war, there is a suprising amount of peace. Someone has to feed the hive worlds.

That is, unless, you want to count goofy superweapons like the Phalanx, Planet Killer, Blackstone Fortresses or Craftworlds, which are exeptions.
