I believe Abbadon weighs in at 275 points and the new Swarm Lord at 280 points. Unconfirmed rumor has it the new Mephiston will cost you 300 points. What do you think is the limit GW will size up to in 5th edition? It is important to remember that both star gods were way up there back when the Necron codex was released. The super pricey HQ of 5th edition are force multipiers and to me nothing quite says it like Dante and Corbulo from the current BA PDF codex. Is it possible we could see an HQ break the 400 point barrier prior to the release of 6th edition?

Faeweaker weighs in at a whopping 333 points.

I suppose its possible, but I doubt it. Mainly for the fact that 400 points is a huge investment at 1500, and its supporting abilities would have to be astronomically good to justify such an extreme cost.

So 350 is the upper limit? Does anyone see the super costed HQ as similar to warcasters?

I can see the Eldar Avatar exceeding his original points cost if they give him all of his abilities back.

Super-powered HQ aren't warcasters.
You still have to mop up the army after killing them (not so with 'casters).

400 is the cap for a single HQ I would say.

Do other armies have point restrictions on HQs? Not a 'this is how much a HQ may cost' but a 'You cannot take this character unless your army is over [x] cost'?

I know that Dark Eldar have the special character Asdrubael Vect, who clocks in at 277 points. He also can't be taken with an army smaller than 2k points (although most will let you use him if you're writing a 2k point list and end up with 1997 or similar). I'm not sure if this is done in the more recent codexes, but if so it might be a good way of balancing these uber-characters by not letting them overwhelm smaller games, in cost or ability.

That's a 3rd/4th edition thing. The only books that still have that are ones that haven't been updated in a decade, like Dark Eldar.

Honestly, we're closing in on WHFB Herohammer here. I really hope things don't get any more ridiculous with superpowered HQ units. 300 points is really pushing it.

I miss the old 25 point HQs from the older third edition codices...

The higher-cost HQs already aren't really worth it (10 berzerkers is better than abaddon and cheaper), so if they produce even more expensive ones I expect that they'll be even less worth their weight. Ghaz is really the only HQ over 200 points that I think is worth it, and even then only in games of high points.

Vect is worth it, but he's not so much 'character' as 'I am taking this purely to get his Dais of Destruction'. Basically a really cool named tank. Don't the IG get one of them too?
