I am pretty new to this game, and have been furiously collecting and painting Orks. I already have an idea to try for some Ork Boyz in the future. I want to try and make a squad (like 10-15) boyz with Tesla looking weapons. The typical Tesla coil looking gun with maybe a big battery back pack. I was thinking of trying to fit some Necron guns into there hands and craft some coils around it and put a globe at the end of the gun. Maybe use a Loota backpack for the Powerpack or something. Very new to the game (and hobby) so tips would be appreciated.

But I bounced this idea off some people at the local gaming store and they wondered why. They said Orks don't have rules for Tesla gun and hence, couldn' use them. Couldn't I just say "Counts as Burna's" or "Flash Gitz" or something. Is it against the rules to take these kinda liberties with models for gameplay? I thought Orks especially where expected to field some oddities...

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

That is a good idea for a conversion. Telsa guns shooting out an expanding arc of energy bolts. Counts as burna's would be fine with most people as long as you tell them that is your burna boyz.

It can count as anything you want as long as you tell the guy youre playing against. Flashgitz would be the most reasonable as they dont have a model and snazz guns can be upgraded to fire bolts of energy (very tesla) in place of solid shot. Flashgitz are generaly made from Nobs because they have the same stat line, but do your thing.
The hobby aspect of the game is a majority for alot of people. Personaly I like to see other peoples models, especialy well executed convertions. Get to work on them and post some pics. DO IT NOW!

They would probably work best as flash gitz, but they could work as many things.

It's a very cool idea. As to whether or not you'll be able to use them, it would depend on who you're playing, and in what context. Many people have no issue allowing proxies or "counts-as" models in friendly games. Even those same people (or, more likely, the organizers/TOs) might, however, take issue in, say, a tournament setting. The cooler they look and the more believably they could function in a similar capacity to the units they are being played as (in this case burnas, lootas, and flash gits could all be reasonably argued, I think), the more likely people will be to let you play them, I think, if they would normally be on the fence about the issue. If you make a unit of boys holding baseball bats and want to call them lootas, you better have a very understanding opponent.

ignore things like " 70% GW".

That is a slowed rule that was made so that people couldn't use entirely self sculpted armies at official GW events. Screw them.

If you have a cool idea for a mod, then I say go for it. Commit to that idea until you have a single prototype model finished and painted. If you like the result then make more.

As for the gaming part of it, just explain when you place the models on the table that they are X unit equipped with Z gear. If your opponent throws a fit about what you see is what you get then you probably don't want to play against him anyway, as he'll bitch and moan about his poor dice rolls and your magic dice of death.

Most importantly, post WiP pics and final result pics.

Hmm... they are Orks... their guns can look hower they want them to look and will still probably do the same thing

As noted above, as long as you are clear with your opponent as to what the weapons represent I don't see why there should be a problem. Just make sure that different weapon types are very distinct from one another. Its always annoying playing against proxied/non-standard models that the owner can't quite remember what they are.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Fluffwise, they sound like good burnas - a mek has designed new tesla guns which shoot 'tesla rays' with exactly the same effect as a burna. So long as they're the only counts-as burnas in your army, and they're about the the same size as burnas, and you tell your opponent the above, no one has any reason to complain.

Let's not have another thread where we confuse conversions and "counts-as" with proxies. The two are completely different approaches to the hobby.

MegaDombro, your idea is fine. Go for it, and please post pics.

I would love to see these. I have a few "counts-as" in my armies, and my opponents don't have any problems with it.

If you play with a good bunch of guys, then you'll never have a problem. My opponents let me run my own models as long as they're clear what they represent; in return I let them proxy things like Bezerkers for Posessed or something similar.

More importantly though - let's see some Work In Progress (WIP) models!
