So www.warpcon.com is at the end of the month. It's a 1500 point tournament in Cork, Ireland (according to Lonely Planet one of the best three places on the planet to visit). Forty-six participants have submitted army lists. The distribution is:
5 Chaos Space Marines
9 Eldar
9 Imperial Guard
1 Sisters of Battle
1 Daemonhunters
5 Marines
1 Salamanders
1 Crimson Fists
2 Ultramarines
1 Dark Angels
1 Necrons
1 Tau
2 'Nids
2 Space Wolves
5 Orks
Eldar and IG make up damn near 40% of the tournament! Oh well, a CSM list will probably win.

Interesting. I'm a little surprised to see Eldar that high but everything else is about right. If you count all the flavors of loyalist marine there are 12 of them, which again is about right.
Don't count out IG though, they've been doing very well in tournaments and if mechanized are basically immune to lash of submission.

Why do people count all the various chapters of space marines differently for these?

Eldar are pretty punishing at 1500 points. IMO that is their sweet spot, though they can be efective at higher points levels as well.

Dark Eldar Wych Cult 4-1-0
Dark Eldar Kabal 36-10-4

Good question. The differentiation of Ultramarines, Crimson Fists, Salamanders, and Marines is especially confusing since they all use the same codex.

If you play Reflictors, with a Vulkan counts-as, do they count you as Marines, Salamanders, or Reflictors?

That one Necron guy must have been swarmed by all the new kids wondering 'wth army is that!?' I've seen more DE players at my FLGS than Necron players....

Participants emailed their list to the tournament organizer and no doubt some identified their army as "marine" while others used a chapter name.

So the tournament just wrapped up. Sixty two 40k players in attendance! Fist and Second place went to Imperial Guard Vendetta forces. Third place was Eldar (not sure the build).

The special characters give bonus rules, like Pedro Kantor (Crimson Fists) makes sternguard veterans scoring units. and the other vanilla marines didn't want to be thrown in the same boat as the Ultramurfs. I know I didnt when I played Salamanders.
