Jealous that Horus is Warmaster
|
I have the models, but I never run it...
...So Dakka, can they be effective? It seems possible; champion, FNP, a standard that adds to combat resolution etc. Stick them with a captain and run them from a Razorback? Any thoughts, as usual, much appreciated.
Also, is it considered bad form to stick a power armoured captain on a terminator size base? I need more base-space for my conversion!

Which is perfectly fine, it better look good .
In general, no matter what the reason, one should ask permission for differing base sizes, but only TFG will have an issue with the Captain on a termy base that looks decent.
__________
As for the command squad, they make a decent counter assaulter. There really nothing too flashy with them... they are decent for what they do if you don't over bling them.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Never met a command squad in battle, but I wouldn't recommend a bigger base for the captain. Not only TFG but tournaments/ FLGS can rule it as "modelling to an advantage" giving him a greater range.
And no, screaming "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" doesn't help

Tough Tyrant Guard

I run one once in a while with a chaplin attached, just so i get fearlessness, and rerolls, Out of a land Raider...
Its pretty effective against squads that are engaged, or that you want to tie up a unit for bit.

lol. That reminds me of when I put my Avatar on a molten rock, quite big.
I have a DA command sqaud and I must admit their actually quite good. The apothecary allows you to shrug off some minor wounds and the champion can really take out enemies.

Awesome Autarch
|
All of my characters are on 40mm bases and I have never, ever had a problem with it. If you model the base up to look nice, no one complains.
And yes, command squads can be pimpin.
5 on bikes with power weapons with Khan and a chappy will murdilate nearly anything but the hardest assualt units.
I like 5 with 4 plasma guns in a razorback or pod, too. They pump out plasma death and with FNP they are far less likely to burn themselves.
Or, you can run them on foot as a counter assault unit but without Khan to boost their In, they are too small of a squad to really pose much of a threat.
I like them and they offer the chance for some really cool modeling opportunities.

I don't know... any model is an oppurtunity for cool modeling, even joe troopers...it just depends on ones imagination.
_____________
As for Command Bikers... I know alot of people like them, but I'm not one who does. So many points for a low model count in a low model count army.
I don't care how durable they look... I want more bodies instead, but that's just me.

Command Squad with Plasmagun x 4, Razorback w/ LC + T-L PG + EA makes a nice squad to go with a Plasma Pistol Captain.
I normally consider the CC option for Command Squads a "fun list" option. The Champion has WS5, and you can put two Powerfists in the unit, but ultimately, it's just too small to be much of a threat, and the more wargear you put on it, the more you loose every time one of those 3+ saves fail. Maybe a naked squad of Apoth, Champion, Standard, and two BP/CS marines would be an economical option. I haven't tried it, but against the right opponents it could really clean up.

Give them each a thunder shield and your save goes invulnerable. (The Thunder shields could only be for DA veterans though, I'm not really sure...)

'Storm' Shields are a nice buy, but pricey.
While the Apothacary can not get one...which kinda sucks.
