To be honest, I don't think it costs very much. Taking into account the average cost of an army, the time spent on making and painting it. It is essentially the same cost as a unit in an army and looks great alongside painted minis, its those details that people notice. Cheers.

True.. but it also depends on what army you running. Since i play tau, i wouldn't need more than 24 dice imho, maybe 10 extra dice in different colors (The 24 would be red, i would say.. have 2 blue ones, 2 white ones and 6 black ones (for wounds)

that, and at over a dollar a dice, its gonna suck when you loose your first one under the gaming table.

and no saying it doesn't happen. we've all had the moment. "Oh crap where did my dice go?!?"

in this case it would be more like "Oh crap my expensive dice! ARRGGHH---NOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

Custom stuff does tend to be expensive. It's par for the course.

I don't know what kind of equipment shatmatau does for these, but for a lot of manufacturing, there's two kinds of costs: fixed costs and per-item costs.

Fixed costs are, well, fixed. For miniatures, you make a mold and it doesn't matter if you want 1 mini or 1000, it costs the same either way.

On the other hand, per-item costs are incurred for each piece.

This guy can, presumably, buy blank dice in large lots, so they're an affordable per-item cost. However, setting up molds or (I expect) programming a CNC machine is a time-consuming process, so that's the expense.

(Note that a lot of expenses are kind of 'semi-fixed' as the price is actually only good for a large but not infinite number of pieces produced.)

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

i had sticker shock when i looked at his prices a year ago roughly but then common sense kicked in. these are custom dice and anything "custom" is going to cost mo' money in any industry. at around $1.50 per die for a custom set (with your own logo), that is around the cost of one nice unit. if you're already spending $300-$400 on the army, another $50 on hobby supplies and $50-100 on a case, that's not much for the finishing touch. the alternatives are that you scratch in and paint your own logo or call up chessex and go through the trouble yourself.

I got the chaos star dice back during the Christmas sale. They are the same color as my army and I love them. Didn't take long to get em ,either. Consider me a very satisfied customer.

One question, the fact that you do several customized cuts on one face of the dice does it influence the dice rolls?

Yeah, this is a major reason I haven't ever ordered custom dice. Does it feth with the rolling?

Ha. For what it's worth, if you do some internet research, there has been some statistical studies that show the rounded-edge Chessex style dice roll "1" more often than any other face.

If you believe the hype of the casinos, the only dice that are truly even in their rolling are the sharp edge/corner casino style dice that cost around $5 apiece. Even those, supposedly, lose their even-distribution after they've been rolled a while and the edges cease to be completely sharp.

I can anecdotally confirm that casino dice are a lot more even. I have been using mine for ~9 months now, and they are really nice, generally giving an expected distribution over large runs (yay orks requiring to roll in a cookie pan). You can get cheaper sharp edged dice that seem to do about as well too and are much smaller.

So I guess my question to Shartmatau would be "Do you have plans to make custom sharp edged dice?" I would totally buy some of those.

I see all these dice, but are there color options available beyond what is listed? Or would that simply become a different kind of custom order?

There have also been internet articles that show they do not roll s any more often.

I agree that unless the manufacturer is spot on, rounded edge dice will consistently favor one number, but honestly it is such a low favor that it shouldn't make a difference for gaming. I think egg-shaped (that is, not a perfect cube) dice are a greater malefactor than round-edged ones.

In response to the OP:

Love the site! Please email my wife and ask her to give me some money, so I can buy some new dice for my new army.
