Around November some of us decided to jump on the Boycott bandwagon, over the C&D letters, pricing, and a whole slew of other problems we were having against GW. so how did you do? did you stick with it? what did you use the money for other than GW prducts? Also was it hard? did you start to get withdrawal? and did you save up and not buy, but are still going to use the money for GW products?
*a warning* last time i tried this a whole (but not all, there were some good posts) slew of fethers just trolled and flamed the thread. (no names but you know who you were) please refrain from posting if you didnt take part in the boycott, unless of couse you just want to be ignored from here on in.

I have been in the so-called "boycott" From November by not buying any GW-made products directly from the shop (and only one armybook by second-hand). The money I saved have been used to start Warmachine. And I'm going to continue the boycott as long as my passion for the Vulkan He'Stan mini maintains low.

So this boycott went for almost a month, around the hollidays and also when the Tyranids were released...
No offense, but it may have been the worst time for it to be attempted, perhaps it should go for longer than a month as well. See if it can actually make a difference to them.
I agree about the C&D letters though, but didn't jump on the boycott bandwagon. It's not that it wouldn't do anything and I just discarded it (I was actually considering it), just that it wasn't the best time to do it.

Well by its very nature a boycott is inconvieniant to everyone. true the nids were coming, but that wouldnt have stopped people from buying them later. still best time or no, the boycott (witch is still on for a few more days) time was more a choosing for A: it being the busy season for GW, and B: that all the crap hapening was at around that time. it would have been silly to issue a boycott say 3 months from the time the C&D letters went out, or 6 months after Tom, who was fired after working 5 years on the LBR6...
Still thanks for the productive post. apretiate it.

You need to commit longer term to a boycott and have some firm aims in mind.
Also consider, how are GW going to notice your dissatisfaction? If its just a personal crusade then you will need to stop spending money on any new GW product for a considerable period of time, GW are not going to apologize for The C&D's so your new spend money will be going elsewhere for years to come.

Perhaps it should continue for a while then, so that it reaches a time where it will effect them, maybe even get a snowballing effect on it through adverstising it on other forums if you haven't already. If they remove the Inquisition the boycott will really take off, expect me to definitely join if they do.
But, the problem is many of the people who buy from GW are ignorant about all the crap that happens and they'll happily drop $50 on something newly advertised. Even if they knew about the discount stores. That's how it works for them. Then talk about how great the last Standard Bearer was
Although I'm not really part of it I've only brought the WH codex since november for $19.26 AUD from Maelstrom Automatically Appended Next Post: Mr. Burning wrote:You need to commit longer term to a boycott and have some firm aims in mind.

Email them, use paper mail to standard Bearer, even call them?

Mine was very short lived. Bought some bitz off an eBay seller and now I've ordered some cavalry from Maelstrom. I was pretty ticked off about the C&D letters, but since then I've realized that many of the places that were using GW's trademarks legitimately should have stood up for themselves and gone to their membership for legal fees. Just like Toyota can't shut down a "talk prius" forum, GW's lawyers know that if they get a letter from a lawyer in response to their C&D, they've got no case. Or perhaps the recipients of the C&D letters agree with GW and that's why none of them fought? The "Oh, we're too small to say no to the demands of a giant, powerful corporation" is getting to be a tired excuse with me. When a larger company threatened legal action over a domain I was involved with, we sent a lawyer's letter back. End result was that we sold the domain for $10k because they knew that trade mark ownership does not apply to URLs for non trade use. And discussion about a product is explicitly not trade use. But did they even try?

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Only one WD since November (painting & modelling article). Bought some board games and Raging Heroes stuff - getting some Soda Pop soon.
Looking at other things makes you wonder how much you really want the GW stuff any more.
I think the only thing that would get me buying GW stuff again is some new Ogres stuff - possibly DE. Think I will sell some of my stuff - got an armorcast reaver titan some where and a boat load of mini's and FW stuff I will never get round too.

I've purhased nothing from GW/FLGS for some time now,my GF bought me some Forgeworld stuff for Christmas though.
However, most of my minis have come from swaps, personal sales in the last 6 months.

So everyone who doesn't agree with you is a troll who deserves imaginary swears and to be ignored in this thread?
I think the whole concept of a boycott is silly if you aren't going to stick with it until it makes a change. A boycott over the holiday season just tells GW you weren't planning on buying minis then anyway. And given how unimpressive the releases were, they appear to have realized that anyway.
Personally, I didn't join any boycott. I will buy GW miniatures when the prices match the value I get from them. Nothing I value as much as GW charges has come out, so I didn't buy anything. And I probably won't buy anything for several more months. Much like I haven't bought anything for most of last year.

While I can't say I 'boycotted' GW, I heavily ramped down my spending over the last few months. I was at about $300 a month, sometimes a lot more (that's a freekin' car payment right there). Now I'm down to ~$40 a month. I think this happened because I came to a realization that I was spending a metric feth ton of cash on models and such when I should be putting it towards 'life' expenses. I've now paid off all of my credit card debt and a small loan I had. Debt free for the WIN!

But OP isnt discussing about the idea about the boycott.
He is merely asking how it went for the people that was boycotting.

see above.
So basically:
On topic: Hawkins , i never joined this specific boycott, however i have been purchasing less GW product over all ( thus sort of counts right! )
Off Topic : The idea of boycotting GW is silly , while discussing about it is sort of related , but its generally nothing to do with the purpose of this thread.
Trolling: Hi , im here and have absolutely nothing related to say but i love to be a part of the excitement!

I sort of doubt GW would "notice" or even care if people stood outside their home office with " WE ARE BOYCOTTING GW!" banners.
I myself am not so much "boycotting" GW,as IMO "boycott" (in this sense) means a limited refrain from purchasing GW products, were I have attempted to (and will continue to do so) avoided buying any GW products (directly) indifenitly, perhaps permently.
I was acustomed to spending $150 or so a month on GW products, and while denying them my piddly $1800 to $2000 a year certianly won't "topple their empire"..it makes me feel a bit better about my choices.

I didn't jump on the Boycott Boat myself unless "Responsible Purchasing" classifies as a boycott. I only bought what I needed and when I was almost or completely done painting existing greys.
I just don't see the point of Boycotting GW. They wouldn't notice, as there's a billions strong herd of chubby, Ice-cream splattered crying little hellspawn to make up the difference for a few months per flock until they get bored, but by the time that happens more of them will move in, and in increased numbers. Not to mention the influx of new players each year that don't know about the old editions or prices, and think GW does fine. It'll be a couple years and a few thousand dollars before they come to the same realizations.
Ahh well. I still enjoy the game and the painting. Not as much on the gaming aspect as I used to, mind you, but still enough for it to be a fun "Beer and pretzels" basement game.

A boycott doesn't work in a vacuum. Obviously, this one had such minimal participation that even if it hadn't occurred over Christmas/release of the 'nid Codex, it would have had no noticeable impact on any of the sales numbers.
An effective boycott is one that you make the company aware of, why you're doing it and what they will have to change in order for it to end, so know exactly what's happening when they look at their balance sheet.

Who's hiding behind a false reality? If they have a small dip in sales that coincides with people cutting back on luxury purchases in general, that would be the reasonable explanation. Boycotts are a protest measure, and it's more than a little counter-productive to carry out a protest in secret.
