Do walkers need to have bases?

Yes, as the model is supplied with one.

Walkers do not need a base due to being walkers.

Dreadnoughts must have a base because it is supplied with one.

anything that, if bought new from GW or a store, comes with a base must be modelled on a similarly sized base. not haveing a base opens up the rules to some abuses, whether intentional or accidental. the defiler (and soulgrinder since it uses the same part), due to it's weird shape, doesn't come with a base so it's the only one i can think of that doesn't need to have one. when they first came out with them, they didn't have a base big enough... although i suspect that the new valkyrie base would be big enough to hold one.

A defiler MIGHT fit on a Valk base if it were all curled up like a dead spider.

It would fit on a normal monster base if it were curled up and upside-down.

But if said dread was supplied without a base (i have an old furioso dread that didn't come with a base) must a player be forced to buy a base for it?

If it didn't come with a base, you're under no obligation to put one on it.

It wouldn't be the worst idea to find a proper base, though.

IIRC Dreadnoughts never came with a base until they were made into plastic

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake.

sounds good, for clarity, I didn't put it on it's base because I had to fit 3 rhino's vindicator and a LR in a single figure case.
Couldn't do it w/ base.

So,you have a base?

Then use this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-Tack

I use blu-tack to base my space hulk miniature. To use both 40K/Spacehulk games.
You can attach/detach easily.

And useful when modeling.
I use these for changeable weapon also. Its easier than magnetting.

Some of the metal ones came with a 40mm square base. And they may (can't remember for sure) have briefly come with the flat 60-ish mm round base just before the plastic kit was released.

Putting them (and defilers) on bases makes life a lot easier for all concerned.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

I wish defilers came on some sort of base. Measuring distance to them can be a real pain. Depending on your opponant the "model" ends at the hull, the legs or the little spiney bits, and worse when playing TFG it changes depending on what is being measured.
Now, the obvious answer is "dont' play that guy" but still, so much the better to avoid confusion where possible. No one likes playing through a game only to find out half way that one's opponant had a completely different understanding of a rule.

This is covered in the Walker rules (which specifically mention defilers as an example of a walker without a base).

The legs are included as a part of the hull.

Edit : Double post

<3 Magnets, It's especially nice for my Trygon/Mawloc. I only ever use one but I also only need 1 model thanks to magnets.

Oh, excellent! I had not seen that previously, and it would have come in really handy playing against that limey bastard a few months back.
Thanks!

Second YMDC thread tonight that has taught me something new about Defilers. My group has always been playing it that the legs never counted as part of the hull, gotta love reading the rulebook more closely!

You brighten my life like a polystyrene hat, but it melts in the sun like a life without love, and I've waited for you so I'll keep holding on without you.
