I wanna start a new army. I've got my main Dark Eldar force, which Ive grown weary of, and a smaller army of Orks, mostly unassembled and entirely unpainted. I have kind of fallen out of love with the Orks, so I figured I could sell em off in order to get a jump-start on my new army. The issue I have with the Dark Eldar is that I have literally been using the same list in almost all of my battles for the past 8 years (which I am forced to do if I want to win, as scourges and mandrakes are a no-go), making things a little monotonous.

So, I need someone to either help me love Orks again, or figure out another army to play. I have no aversion to Space Marines, or any army really. CSM is an army that I find particularly appealing, however I am open to any wild (or mild) suggestions.

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

Whats the reason for not liking the orks? I just started them and have around 1500 pts. and am really enjoying the models especially the nob boxes. The BW is another great model as you can make it several different ways.
If you were leaning towards chaos they are another fun army to start as they can be customized just as much as orks. Word of warning though they can get monotonous also with just a few tournament worthy list builds.
I still think you would be better off with orks as there are many lists that you can take that are tournament worthy. I myself am doing a footslogger build with KFF mek and Zogwort for some good laughs.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

Give reasons, not one word, mate, you've been here long enough to realize that.

I say go by what models you like to be honest, ever thought of fantasy?

How do you know this?
anyway, you seem like you whould like the long-ranged guns of the tau, but, you want to play CSM, yet they are the same as SM, snd you played dark eldar, therefore, you seem to like the gothic look of the models. Am I correct?

Have you tried an all foot slogging DE list? It is competitive but very few people want to play it since warriors are so ugly.

Basic list:
3 Heamons on bikes

Elites:
2 wyche units
1 warp beast
1 mandrake

Troops
6 x 10 warriors. blasters and DL

Fast attack
3 bikes 2x blasters

Heavy
3 units of scourge all with DL (or one squad with SC if you don't have a heavy mech meta)

That sounds like a list to make people hate DE .. What are the wyches gonna do? 6+ save and no transport..

Scourges cant move and fire with Dls and you have no transports to provide cover

Yeah its a lot of dark lances but you auto lose vs people who also have a lot of models and simply dont care about lances

DE need transports or dont play them imo.. more frustrating than pure GK

Thanks for all the replies guys! Maybe I haven't given da boyz a good chance, my main reason (a pretty dumb one, now that I think of it) for not wanting to play them is the fear that they are too popular at the moment. Not that they are the most popular things, but that they seem to be considered a top tier army that power gamers can cling to. Seems rather unorkish ta me, pickin an army to win battles (har har). Been pondering the killiness of a big unit o meganobz with the Mad Dok attached and salivating!

I've considered Tau sometimes, had a friend that played em then sold em, the idea of crisis suits jetting around and blasting stuff sounds fun and a lot less monotonous than DL spam (srry clthomps, spamming lances is kinda whats been wearing on me with the dark eldar. I like your obligatory warp beast pack though :-D just bought some from ebay this past Friday, finally, lol.)

Fantasy does appeal to me, but I am worried about the smaller playerbase. Not many 40k players in Montana as it is, haha.

CSM still sounds fun, but it does seem like I could work myself into a rut with em. "hurr durr 2 DPs with lashes and 9 obliterators" ain't my scene, baby. Chaos Raptors and Dreadnaughts seem tight, despite everyone's hatred of em.

In conclusion, I think Ill give my Orks a shot. Ill probably like em again if I actually put em together and get ta krumpin! If i dun like em, ill come whining back to you guys again.

Thanks again for the input guys!

The best way to give advice on the subject is what kind of army do you like? I have a friend that likes orc and is going to space marines as well since they can do hand to hand just as well but have an armor save as well.

I have the Dark Angels for shooty/assault and am working on Space Wolves for the assault vs insane odds army.

There are many different types of armys with each one having at least two different play options that people enjoy. Not that you shouldn't give your orcs another try, but what are you looking for in a new army besides wanting to play something other than DE?

Maybe go bigger? So that you can afford to use a Mandrake or Scourge?

As for the whole "I've grown weary of them..." apporach, it sounds just like a DE to me.

Well, I'd go for CSM.
My EC army did very well in all games I played so far and I have them since 2003.

Eh.....I think that's not very accurate. If you put 10 orks against 10 space marines...the space marines will win. But that's not really fair is it? If you put 50 points of orks against 50 points of space marines....I'm pretty sure the orks are going to trounce on the space marines.

To the OP: The reason you should play orks is because they are the most versatile army in 40k. There is no "approved" way to run orks - you can assemble them in HUGE variety and still make a competitive list as long as you're following a theme.

Thanks for more input! Dash, your proposed Orkish army themes soften my outlook on seemingly "overly effective lists." It can be orky to totally stomp someone! I found your other post to be a good read.

Ringarin I think I have just been looking for a more satisfying way to win battles. Picture this: a nasty bunch of Obliterators trundle across the field and, well, obliterate one of my ten man squads of troops. The loss of troops is inconsequential, however, as I have 3 or 4 other identical, cheap squads that respond to the Obliterators by vaporizing them with 6 or 8 S8 ap2 shots. If those were to fail, I would still have dark lances from my wych or hq raiders to fill in the gaps. A multitude of cheap heavy weapons can be fun, but get boring if you've been using them every game for almost a decade.

Not that Im weary of the concept of piratical space elf soul drinkers with a penchant for torture and fine wine! Watch your back EF, I might have to glue an inquisitors head onto my talos wohohoho

CSM still kinda tug on my heartstrings, but heck, I basically like any 40k army, and Orks offer the greatest degree of utility and fun-a-bility(?). More fun with a big battlewagon or a Deff Dread or something that doesn't get wrecked by bolters.

You know I saw go with orks, you can do more overall compared to chaos, and you already have an army that needs to stay dedicated to singular things, why not go with da orks and enjoy a race that will allow you to try multitudes of things up until you find your favorite.

This is good.... isn't it?
