I did a search on the forums and came up with a 4th Edition rule but how's it work in 5th Edition
Example - 5 Sternguard with combi-plasmas rapidfiring
do you roll each Sternguard seperate or do you roll all the dice then allocate?

You roll each of them separate. The individual model whos weapon gets hot is the model who has to take the wound.

Every time a Gets Hot! weapon inflicts a wound against the firer, only that model actually receives the wound. As such, if a Gets Hot! weapon 'misfires' (for lack of a better term) more than once, those wounds can only be allocated to that specific model.
So, if you had 5 Sternguard with combi-plasmas and you rolled 10 dice, you could potentially cause more casualties to your own squad than you should. Roll each separately or invest in lots of different coloured dice.

Yeah as above and it is a total pain in the a...
I'm sure most people would happily let you roll all the dice at the same time and have you then allocate the wounds as this is a nice balance you get to keep a Sarge that may be differently armed alive but you could be takin more casualties than necessary.

Hello.
Seems that there is a misconception here.
When your troops rapid fire some plasma, it's better for you to separate each pair of dice for each firer, instead of rolling your handful of dice at once. By using second method of rolling, you may have potentially more losses, than in the 1st method.
As already said, the individual model who's weapon gets hot, is the one who will make an armour save.
If occurs, he will test only once. Rules don't say you test 2 times, weapon has got hot, roll a save, that's it.
The rules-wise method results in less losses, so use it !
Just pick a few pairs of coloured dice for that.

Nah you test twice it is possible for say a marine character with combi-plasma to do 2 wounds of damage to himself in one turns shooting.

Oh S t, you'right on this point. It's not resolved the same between 4th & 5th editions.
Still, by losing potentially only one model for snake eyes, this way losses are minimized.
Humm, well... for characters, it's tricky, so don't buy combi-plasmas.

Yes this is true iof you fail both saves still only one model dies. This is the correct way to play it.
