Here we go - wanted to keep some Hormies and Stealers as I already have them painted.

HQ

Tervigon + Catalyst 175
Alpha Warrior + lash whip and bone sword 95

Troops

3 x Warriors with Devourers + Rending Claws 105
8 x Genestealers, 1 x Broodlord 172
16 X Hormagaunts + toxin sacs 128
16 X Hormagaunts + toxin sacs 128

Heavy Support

Trygon 200

Total 1003 points

Thoughts? I wonder if the stealers are too vulnerable in a 1k list as they're a big point sink, and there's currently a lack of anti-mech. Should I replace the stealers with Zoans?

Alternative is to take a Mawloc rather than a Trygon and drop poison from one unit of Hormies (who'd get relegated to screening) and use those points to buy a Zoan.

Like the layout. But I've noticed that the Gargoyels are not being feilded? Are they that so so that they are not worth playing?

Any thing that can happen will happen badly....

Gargoyles are pretty awesome now. But they weren't for a long while, so few folks have the models, and going out to snag a ton of new ones is probably not high on most folks list - not compared to some of the cool new stuff like Hive Guard, Trygons, etc.

For the points I think they are great, Already picked up a box and its over 1/2 painted already,

Especially with a little buff from a tervigon, or backup from a tyrant power,
Having poison and str 5 attacks that reroll to wound most is amazing.
Plus I fell bad for someone who is doing rhino fun when its gets surrounded by them then blows up,
hehe.

They're now completely badass, but not included for a few reasons -

a) I'm a really slow painter, and the idea was to retool my existing gargoyle-free army into something usable with the new codex with as little work as possible (and it's still a lot of work! - it needs a Tevigon, Trygon, Tryranid Prime, poison sacs on 32 hormies, up to 32 if I can be arsed spinegaunts getting replacement arms and new devourer arms for my warriors), so I didn't want to be painting more numerical troops.

b) I'm not sure a thousand point list would let me fit in enough to protect them from becoming an obvious kill point.

c) It's something to add when I expand to 1500 points, innit :-)

I'm slowly beginning to think I might have to playtest the poison on the 2nd brood of Hormies, which would mean lots and lots of magnets...

I would drop the tervigon and get another tyranid prime and warrior squad. The tervigon is on its own and has little support, kill it and no more gants. Though take another warrior squad and prime you've got another tough unit with at least 9 wounds then plus the prime on top.

Warriors are the new troops, and I think they rock really well.

Tervigon seems to be doing nothing in this list, doesn't have Toxin sacs or adrenal glands to buff the Termagants it produces whilst you have no other Termagant units to receive buffs either.

Why take Stealers and not give them toxin sacs?!?! They are mandatory now!!

I'd give the Alpha warrior a ranged weapon so he can shoot with his squad the BS buff is more useful than the WS buff.

You've got 2 big units of Hormagaunts but nothing to help them reach combat which they won't in this list. You have to remember Hormagaunts are a fair bit slower now they are not beasts so a faster unit to offer a distraction is a general must. Now you could use the stealers for this but I'd suggest toxin sac gargoyles are the way forward. Dropping the Tervigon should allow you to get a couple of decent sized units of these guys.

Finally the Trygon. It is mean and nasty but at 1,000 points probably the wrong choice. In general these guys are 2 or none, you may get away with it in 1,000 points but if he's got any decent anti-MC fire power that Trygon will die the turn it shows up. However the Mawloc does its damage whilst showing up which makes them a far more viable option for using on their own. I'd suggest this swap.

Okay guys, thanks - interesting thoughts. Tervigon is gone :-) But I think toxin sacs are too expensive for stealers given how fragile they are. Was already intending to give the Tyranid Prime a devourer.

However, you got me thinking about serving as a distraction, and I wanted more anti-tank, and it occurred to me there's one obvious choice - the Doom of Malan'Tai in a spore pod. People seem utterly terrified of it (not unjustifiably, it's ludicrously undercosted), and it's got a 3+ invulnerable save, so it soaks up a ton of fire if dropped in behind enemy lines. That and a Trygon at the same time will be plenty distracting to save the Hormies....

So, what do we think of this...

HQ

Alpha Warrior + lash whip and bone sword 95

Elites

Doom of Malan'tai in Mycetic Spore with Cluster Mines 150

Troops

3 x Warriors with Devourers + Rending Claws 105
8 x Genestealers, 1 x Broodlord 172
16 X Hormagaunts + toxin sacs 128
16 X Hormagaunts + toxin sacs 128

Heavy Support

Trygon + regeneration 225

Total 1003 points

You have virtually nothing to kill vehicles. I would drop the trygon and add some Zoanthropes and perhaps a unit of ymagl stealers which can hurt vehicles in a pinch. This style of list makes all of the opponets heavy weapons much less effective but you need to screen your warriors with gaunts or they will get instagibd

You won't spend 3 points on your stealers (a total of 24) to make them 50% more effective, but you will spend 60 points on a Broodlord?

A Stealer is 14 points to get a 50% increase in killing power you are only spending 3 points, that is about the most efficient 3 points you will EVER spend. If you won't take toxin sacs on them then you shouldn't be taking them at all.

If a toxin saced stealer isn't worth 17 points to you then a normal stealer shouldn't be worth 11 let alone 14 points!

I also agree with the others you are better off swapping out the Doom for some Zoanthropes or Hive Guard to give you some anti-mech fire power. If I bring a Land Raider (granted fairly rare at this point value) then the ONLY thing in your entire army that can even scratch it is the Trygon.

Trygon on its own even in a 1,000 points is likely to get popped the minute it shows it's head. I'm a big fan of taking 2 Trygons or none if you want just 1 you are better off with the Mawloc if it gets killed after its arrived that is less of a loss at its arrival is its main threat. THat gives you 55 points to spend on changing The Doom into a Spred unit of Zoanthropes, or a pair of Zoanthropes and a pair of Hive Guard (dumping the Broodlord for the extra points and giving the stealers toxin sacs).

Hive Guard wil give you better anti-mech against most armies the Zoanthropes will give you heavy tank stomping ability.

Cool list, but your lacking anti-armor pretty baddly. Your only really big threat to armor is the trygon (as your tervis gonna be sitting back buffing), and once he pops up, everything and their mother will target it. A good armor spam list would be tough for you to crack open (see the air calvary spam IG list). The genestealers could as well, but just like the trygon, they show up and they're gonna get shot up. I think you need something ranged with the chance to blow em up!
