Hello.

My boffer fantasy LARP in Northern New Jersey is involved in a big recruitment drive (we're trying to approximately double our current player base) and we're designing new flyers and posters to give out and hang in gaming stores and during conventions and such.

If somebody was telling you about a LARP, or you were looking at a LARP poster, what information would you want to know about the game to get you interested enough to check out the website?

Mechanics?
Price?
Size of the camp?
Size of the player base?
How old the game is?
Whether or not we have girls? (We do, btw)
How immersive the experience is?
How many races/classes our system offers?
Other?

I posted this on the Poll request thread, but I suspect that it will not be selected as an official poll, so I'll just do this instead.

I really appreciate any and all input, as hopefully it will help design better posters.

that'd be kind of a stand off.
Jason vs. Aliens on the other hand is Jason going through aliens like through a goose. Excellent.
On the other hand Jason vs. Congress would be cool.

1. The Jhereg Camp.
2. Where the Agabooshka are (I want my free Curry dammit, even if it does mean the risk of being tomorrow nights meat course!)
3. The Lions, so I can infiltrate them again.
4. The Tavern.

That's about it!

I love LARP me. Give it a go guys. You probably won't regret it (unless the system is poop. We use shouted stuff, rather than Tennis Balls). Like any Roleplay game, it's the players that make it!

That's a pretty solid plan! Poor old Lord Jhereg got dragged off in chains and horribly murdered for dealing with our resident Vamp, Lord Silver. And that was just the first night. Thankfully I was in the Tavern and thus avoided getting jobbed along with the rest of the camp!

QFT!

on topic..... what put's me off are a lot of the videos online or crazy nerds hitting eacher other with swords which are quite obviously badly painted foam. I admit I'm a geek and I do historical re-enactment - that means metal weapons and dissapointment if I don't have new bruises on a Sunday afternoon. To get me to LARP you've seriously gotta work on didtching the image it has with everyone i know of it being a group of weird nerds who want to play fight and shout 'Magic missile!'

No offense intended to you LARPers out there!

As soon as a proper one happens (about as likely as someone clicking the "No, I am not over 17" button online) I'm sure this will be true.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Oh some of the swords associated with the decent companies are amazing. The last time I was at the Gathering I was broke, but I was drooling over some of the weaponry.

Nothing like the stuff you tend to see in those mickey take vids on youtube.

Regarding the actual OP.

Mechanics?

Quite important, you want to know the game is run by actual judges, who can be honest and know what they are doing. Magic is a key factor, as I have seen it done brilliantly, as in the Gathering, and not so great, a weekend thing in Exeter.

Price?

Depends on the venue, if you are actually over a weekend, camp up etc, then this as long its not over the top, tends not to be too big an issue. Think I paid £40 for the august bank holiday weekend last time I went. I'd be happy to pay £50-100 now, as I expect its gone up a bit since I was last there in 97.

Size of the camp?

Hopefully a fair size, Lorien Trust had two smaller events, but both still seemed fairly large. Depends on the size of attendance as well, Gathering 97 had about 3K folks in attendance.

Size of the player base?

Varies, although I enjoy the big events, the best ever event I did was about sixty-eighty strong at the 'Tower' in Burnley. (Sadly closed last I heard.) Which was the floor of an old cotton mill converted into a labyrinth.

How old the game is?

All have to start somewhere, but the longer its been running, then its more likely there is more chance of large numbers.

Whether or not we have girls? (We do, btw)

Not a factor, but LARP does indeed seem to attract its fair share of the ladies, and not all drnken fat chicks as some would suggest. Gets me hot under the collar when you a good looking lady dressed as Drow with black skin paint.

How immersive the experience is?

As long as folks are there for fun and actually do some RP this tends to come with it. You can chuckle at the odd person dressed as Sub Zero, but when half the organization isn't following the subject matter, expect numbers to fall.

How many races/classes our system offers?

No idea on this one, Lorien hadn't introduced racial stuff when I last went (not sure if they have by now, its been 12yrs) and just had skills you could purchased from a pts pool, which effectivily gave you the class. Of course if you didn't have any magic, all combat came down to your own actual ability.

Other?

Nothing else springs to mind, other than make sure there are good food vendors, and some kind of tavern. Although the Bears faction did seem to spend most of their time in there, and not doing much out in the field Roleping the four years I attended.
