I've been fiddling with the idea of starting a very small Necron force to get a break from my Marines.
However, one thing I really can't stand about the Necrons is how monochromatic they are. There's only so much you can do with a metallic robot. What do folks do to make Necrons stand out on the tabletop?
I've seen the pics of the guy who airbrushed flames on all of his Destroyer bodies and Monoliths, and it was neat, but a little outside my style zone.
What else do folks do to avoid the "Oh, Necrons. Did you drybrush those Boltgun and dip them?" problem?

I did mine in Tin Bitz with a Dwarf Bronze drybrush, then just based them with sand. Still simple to do and makes them a bit lighter than the stereo-typical necron army.

Take some elements of the tinheads and paint them in a contrasting color, preferably very saturated. Use dynamic poses for the warriors to get some life in the models. Here's how I do mine:

I did boltgun metal for the bodies, Necron Abyss for the shoulders, painted the faces for the destroyer types and immortals then glossed them to give them the shine. For the lords, did shining gold for the chest cavaties and masks. If you paint the bases contrasting colors they also set them apart, did goblin green with some grass flock to set the scene.

Thanks for all the ideas, all. I think maybe a non-standard metallic tone for the main bodies, and then a ceramite-looking color for faces and scapulae would look nice. Hit the ceramite parts (face, shoulder blades) with a brush-on gloss coat, and maybe include some alternative colored Gauss rods.

Well you could always try a bone looking Necrons. They would be a light color compaired to how most other people paint them. And besides who doesn't want an army of bone chilling skeletons?

Just paint them like you'd paint any other army, particularly space marines.

Here's a necron Destroyer lord a made a year ago. It's painted in a midnight-theme, with stars on it's body (to fit with the stargods)
Its necron abyss as basecoat for the blue, highlighted up to Ice blue.

An idea i have been throwing around is a rusty necron force, just stipple it up and you could get them done in no time.

So many versions of the scarab lord but has anyone tried to do a Scorpion lord? throw a wraith tail body on the back end? In theory it sounds awesome, i just have to have the patience to want to take up the torch

My necrons are painted up in a light (body and joints) and dark blue (armour and gun) with light blue rods, scheme (i play swolves on an ice themed board) and they really stand out elsewhere

Admittedly I've only seen one necron army played in the local store, and it was by someone passing through. That said it was incredibly memorable.
They were all paint tausept ocher with circular markings. Not t'au necrons. He'd painted the entire army up as crash test dummies...

Something like that?
I also added a Staff of Light shooting bit at the end of the tail, because I thought it looked cool ^^

Steal littleboyblues cracked marble paint scheme for em. I think it'd look sweet!
|
As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time. |
