I have a friend looking to get into TT. He wants a shooty army but likes the looks of SM. Tau is his second option.

I always play a generally balanced list so I am not really much help when it comes to coming up with a dedicated shooty list. Suggestions?

Thanks

Space Marines do make a good shooty list with units like the Thunderfire Cannon and the new Typhoon (just to name a couple). I wouldn't think of them as the shootiest army out there, but they do have great leadership buffs to keep them on the board (and shooting), and are very resilient when firing from across the board. 3+ Armor and 4+ Cover on your basic troops is very nice as well.

I'm sure others can chime in on the even shootier armies, though. Space Marines can do it, but will always tend to be generalists. If you build a balanced list with a focus on shooting but take advantage Marine strengths, they can be very efficient. Pure shooting is not always efficient for Marines.

I have tried in some friendly games and dedicated shooty was not very effective.

On a side tangent, one friendly game I played tac spam with devastator spam. It worked against my opponent who was also SM. I had so many marines he just couldn't kill them all!

Look around the rest of the forum and get an idea of what you want to run, then post a list for us to critique. Or post the list you used in those friendly games. Even if it sucks, at least it will give us an idea of what models you have or what you want to get.

Space Wolves are quite shooty, and resilient. Tau are extremely shooty, but quite weak. Orks can put forth more bullets than probably both combined, but less accurately. Dark Eldar are long range snipers, extremely lethal. Eldar are somewhat too. Imperial Guard are absolutely shooty.

Just pick an army.

I play SM myself and play a shooting heavy list. Tactical Squads and Devastator Squads are the way to go, scouts are good too, with that nice heavy bolter of theirs. I would defffinatly use a 5 man devastator squad with 4 plasma cannons. Rolling 1's is just not an issue with you cause on average 18 wounds on 10 models, and they can be used to put defilers away too. I would also give necrons a look too.

Orks orks orks orks.......and so on

This list was seriously thought up in 3 minutes in response to another users heavy liking tactical squads, but I think it would be fun, and quite shooty.
