Can you have any other one besides "PRAISE THE EMPEROR" and not risk being shot/turning to chaos?

In the end, SoB are uppity female canines who enjoy their faith in the emperor so much, I'd say they themselves are no longer truly human. They've given up normal life in exchange to become bolter-bitches.

Forever alone

Well considering many Imperial citizens have peaceful contact with aliens and often aren't even aware of how things work on Terra, I'd say it's not all as GRIMDARK as it's made out to be.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

For the so called "common people"? Sure you can, provided that you make a distinction between general and local level. On a general level you MUST follow one of the following: 1) Imperial Creed as preached by the Ministorum, 2) Adeptus Mechanicus, 3) Astartes Chapter Cults or you are screwed. On a local ( like planetary ) level the Imperium really does not care what your political beliefs are. Communism, Feudalism, Theocracy or Anarco-Syndicalism. Just as long as you follow one of the accepted creeds, stay loyal to the Imperium and pay the tithe.

You forgot one. "Praise deh mahn on deh Gold-Plated Toilet who needs to get off cause I really gotta go!"

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

There are democratic planets in the Imperium as said in Dark Heresy, some even have human rights, but those worlds are few and far between each other.

You can have any opinion you like until it is deemed heretical by the Inquisition.

In the bigger picture? No. Praise the Emperor.

On your own planet though, there are possibilties. I imagine that there could very well be some planets that have something akin to democracy or a bit more political freedom. It's not actually set in stone how a Planetary Governor comes to (or holds on to) power or his/her station.

Based on the SW codex it is possible to have different opinions, but only if you have enough firepower to defeat them when they come to throw you in prison.

Yes, but generally that means they just go away and get more firepower of their own. And you will get squashed like a bug. It may take 12 years* but you will.

*If you don't have a fully stocked Munatorium military hardware storage planet with massive defences and an army of fanatically devoted followers, it'll probably take a lot less. Especially if you don't get a heap of CSM, daemons and a chaos titan legion coming along part way through to help you out.

Tied and gagged in the back of your car

It all depends on the relation your planet has with Terra. If they're far away and out of touch, it doesn't matter much, especially if your leader doesn't mind freedom of thought/speech. However, if your home is deep in the imperial grip, you better get on your knees, close your eyes, and scream EMPRAH!

The only exception would be Inquisitors, obviously. Since they have the power to do pretty much anything they want. Of course, even they can be brought forward for questioning if they seem a little *too* heretical.

I'm pretty sure the High Lords don't really give a damn about HOW an planet of thiers is run, as long as it is contriuting it's tithe and recognises the authority of the Emperor.

On a side note. Is slavery banned in the Imperium? (I mean actual slavery, not people who have little choice in their careers)

Nope. The Imperium, as has been stated, does not give a rats ass about how people are treated as long as they get their tithes.

Servitors at least. There are probably proper slaves in some places, but Servitors don't complain.

slavery seems to be all good if the soul drinkers omnibus is to be taken as canon

seeing as they are hitting up a slave ship/sphere/thing and then destroy it peeving off the imperial escorts (and the after seemingly attacking the adeptus mechanicus)

I thought servitors was mostly a sort of punishment?

Anyway, one cannot deny that in the huge realm of the Imperium, there would be some civilised worlds that do have a bit of a politcal freedom. As long as they continue to swear fealty to the Emperor, then how they run the planet is up to them.

Servitors seem to be made in different circumstances. Those that aren't as capable (mechanus worlds), those that are pre-implant initiates to the SM and fail the trials (a couple of chapters, certainly SW), those that are specially made/bred for it (esclarchy). And likely any other source of humans if it works for the circumstances.

They don't always return with more firepower. It talks about the Inquisition wanting to check out the Space Wolves to make sure they hadn't gone traitor. I can't recall if they were attacked or just met with a large fleet. But they left and never came back. At least one other listing in the codex history where they fought space marines over a grudge.

Yeah, I'm sure that even with the SW military strength they couldn't get much further than they already are and not get ganged up on and crushed.
