Hi all.

From what i can gather from reading the rule book is that you get your cover save first, and then your armor save. A staffer in my local GW shop told me that thats not true and that only the best of all your saves counts....

So, who is correct here? it just seems odd to me that a bullet could go past the wall in front of you and then your armor does nothing.....surely its both?

or are we both wrong?

It's one or the other, not both. Cover saves only help when the bullet is sufficiently strong already to penetrate your armor. It doesn't make a TON of sense when you are talking about a wall, where the round would be slowed down by the impact, but when you think about being behind bushes or something that wouldn't slow the round, the rule makes sense. For simplicity it applies in all cases.

Only the better of the two saves may be taken.

I believe that you take the best cover save depending on the situation:

IE a SM has a 3+ save, but if in cover of a wood or something, would get a 4+ save from the woods.

If shot at by a bolter, they would use the 3+ save, as it is better than the 4+ save.

If an ork had the same situation, they would have an (off the top of my head) 6+ save normally, and a 4+ cover save.

The cover save is better than the armour save (which would be ignored as the AP of the bolter is better than 6+ anyway), so they would use the cover save, rather than the armour save.

If the AP of the weapon is better than the normal armour save, they would get the cover save instead. So if the SM was shot by a lascannon rather than a bolter, it would normally ignore the 3+ save, but since he is in cover, he gets the worse 4+ save for being in cover.

You only ever get to make a SINGLE save, either Armour, Cover or Invulnerable - and you must take the best save you have.
