I play against a lot of SM with my friends, since we are all relatively new players. I have invested the most into my army and have a diverse infantry base with moderate tank/artillery support. I just got my Vulkan model put together, and my friends and I usually play between 1500 and 2000 points. The twist is one of my friends just DUMPED his tax money on 3000 points worth of Eldar in one day.

Now I come to the reason for this post: Who is a good, complimentary HQ choice to bring when I build a Vulkan list? I usually run the following in 1500, for example

Vulkan

Tac Squad w/
10 marines
Meltagun
Multimelta
Combi-melta (sarge)
Drop Pod w/ locator beacon

Tac Squad w/

Combi-melta (sarge)
Drop Pod w/ locator beacon

Termie Assault Squad w/ TH/SH

Vanilla Dread

That's 1060 if my math is right from memory and then I fill the rest in with either fast attack and troops or a few heavy support.

I would just like some suggestions as to who is good to bring to the party with Vulkan or is he just a stand alone kind of dude?

Stand alone. Points are tight as it is. For 1500 you need 1 more tac squad and some mm/hf speeders.

I'm not sure about the entire army being dropped/deep striking, but if you can get it to work, kudos to you.

How exactly does vulcan list work?
If multimelta are move and fire , wouldnt your enemy just stay out of the distance?

I don't deep strike them all, I like to have the dreads on the table at the start in as forward a position as possible. I march them and vulkan downfield and hope my reserve rolls are good. My enemies seem to not understand Vulkan's Melee Prowess, so he is usually ignored for the Dreadnoughts. First turn I always drop pod assault.

In reference to what you said, the MM/HF speeders sound good, but they seem like they are made of paper. One good shot from a heavy weapon and they go spinning into oblivion. Is there a proper way to deploy/use them?

Sorry for bombarding you w/ questions I want to get better at playing the game.

I'm pretty sure most people use MM/HF speeders to either:
1) Suicide run an opposing vehicle and hopefully destroy it with a twin-linked MM shot.
2) Use it to reinforce your combat line with HF against hordes and MM in a similiar role as aboe.

Then again I'm not too sure myself.

That actually sounds crazy enough to work. If I deep strike the speeders in they won't get shot first friggin' turn but will be able to suicide run a transport or something bigger if I'm lucky.

A few things

Personally I'd switch the meltas in at least 1 tac squad for flamers, to get some more killy potential, but that is just me.
Aside from that, the previous posters are right, MM/HF speeders are fantastic in a vulkan army or if you are afriad they are to fragile, a 3 model MM attack bike squadron. You can turbo boost for a 3+ cover Save and they need ot be hit by STR 8 shots to instant death them. All in all not a bad choice.

As for an HQ Choice that is always a tough one. Whenever I see vulkan I see him run alone. That being said, maybe a Librarian with gate/null void and a small unit of stern guard with combi meltas/flamers may be a good combo? That way you get a unit that can pretty much tackle anything be it infantry or tanks that isn't to bad in CC and follows the theme of your army.

Having played Vulkan Marines for almost a year now, I can say for certain that the best secondary HQ choice is a Librarian with Null Zone. Preferably with a storm shield.

Deamon cry when you put twin-linked heavy flamers on their troops and they have to re-roll their invulnerable saves.

It's also a huge force multiplier against nobz when you hit them with Master crafted Thunderhammers.

The null zone/gate librarian I like. My lack of extra Sternguard with combi-weapons is the restricting factor. I DO however have an extra storm shield I could throw on my Librarian. I like the cut of your jib.
