I'm thinking of getting into 40k again ahving not really played since 2nd edition owing to my girlfriend deciding she loves the look of tyranids and Chaos Space Marines (which i'll do a separate post on to help her decide as she's torn between them).

I GM Dark Heresy and have long been a fan of the fluff and flavour if the Inquisition in 40k. However, Daemonhunters is a nearly (?) all metal range which makes for a very expensive army.

I was wondering, therefore, how well Daemonhunters (Or witchunters as it's mainly the Inquisitor+retinue I like the idea of) does when allied to Guard or Marines.

I've also read the many and contradictory rumours on the Inquisition getting a new codex given how out of date the old one is, and if that brings with it plastics then I'd rather not have shelled out for all metal in advance of this happening in the next year or so.

With the options being:

Inquisition main with allied guards
Inquisition main with allied marines
Space Marines main with allied Inquisition (probably themed as deathwatch killteams).
Guard main with allied inquisition

How well do the above four options do in play, are they 'fun' (and how balanced would they be with either Chaos Space Marines or Tyranids as I'd like to avoid a pairing that sees either one of us distinctly outmatched).

Thanks for any advice.

Maining as Guard and Space marines really opens up your chances for more variety and lists. There's no doubt that SM and IG are the core of the Imperium's forces, and as such they often are given releases more often.

But I hear whispers that a combined WH/DH codex is the next one out, so who knows!

I really want this to happen but I think we may be speaking heresy

No poll? Anyhow, go IG & =I=, for the variety. We have enough SM already.

I wasn't looking for votes on it, hence no poll. Instead I was hoping to get advice on how well they went together and how fun the current Inquisition rules are in 5th and/or how fun they were combined with either marines or Guard. For the guard I like the tanks, valkyrie and the imagery of 100+ lasguns. For the marines it's the sternguard, tanks and a few of the other figures that stand out (SM Commander for example).

IG is good enough alone. Add Inq for some HtH, convert the Inq & retinue, and that's great stuff.

I play IG with allied WH/DH, they really add some usefull options.I hope we get a new DH dex and keep current WH dex.

even in the future nothing works!

I would think it would be most enjoyable to do Guard allied with Inquisition. Marines allied with Inquisition would just double up your unit types and give slightly different weapons to one group. Guard with Inquisition would mean adding firepower, armor and assault ability that they didn't already have. Money wise it would probably cost more as Guard is an expensive army to play, but I'd think it would be the most enjoyable. As far as over all advice. Buy the codexes of the armys you are interested in and read them. You will probably know what you want to play after that. If you decide not to play it then you will know what the army you are facing can do.

Well both the WH and DH Codex have vanished from the GW website, so I'd wait before buying either...

But that's also an important choice to make right there.
When you say Inquisition, is it WH or DH you have in mind?

I would go Inquisition + IG. There are restrictions against using Space Marines and Grey Knights in the same list, so you'd be limiting your choices half the time. Plus, the new Guard codex has all kinds of new hawtness to keep you busy with all sorts of wacky army list variations.

Not if you take SM as your primary army.
They you CAN take GK units (but have no heavies).

See the IG FAQ for what restrictions there are on the inducted IG, though. No tank squadrons for YOU.
