So game wise, which Ultramarines Company would be the most powerful? I'm starting them because I like the Greek/Roman theme they have.

Like a Termie heavy 1st Company, or 2nd with Sicarius, etc.

What if Calgar is included? Would that be the 1st or could he be with any of them. I'd kind of like to use him.

Please note that the only other Marines I've played are Space Wolves, so I don't really know anything about the Codex Astartes or how the Ultramarines are organized.

I'm really thinking 1st since my favorite space marine units are terminators, Land Raiders, and Dreadnoughts.

Define "powerful".

The 1st Company is Veterans (Terminators, Sternguard, Vanguard).

The 2nd-6th Companies (through 5th? 6th) are the Battle Companies, with something like 6 Tactical Squads, 2 Assault Squads (including bikes), and 2 Devastator Squads.

The 7-9 Companies are Reserve Companies, arranged as Tactical, Assault, and Devastator, I believe. The Assault Company is cross-trained as Bikers.

The 10th Company is the Scout Company.

Additional elements, besides indigenous transports (Rhinos, Razorbacks, Drop Pods), are provided by the Forge (armour, Dreadnoughts), the Fleet (from Destroyers to Battle Barges), the Librarium, the Reclusium (Chaplains), the Apothecarium, and from the assorted support companies.

That's the duty roster, the actual flexibility in action is why you get the mix-and-max flexibility of the army list. If you want to really go classic, then I suggest that you take a Battle Company and then add in whatever you want to form a task force or detachment.

If you really like Land Raiders, Terminators, and Dreadnoughts, it might be something to look into a Master of the Forge, a Librarian in Terminator Armour, several units of Terminators with Land Raiders as dedicated transports, Dreadnoughts in your Heayv Support slots, and then throw in a few units of Scouts to hold objectives. Or use the Dark Angels Codex.

That sounds like a pretty good idea (the MOTF)

I assumed it was just the 10 companies plus the inner circle which included the chapter master, the master of sancity, etc.

By powerful I mean in a game. I just want a theme.

I'm sure i could make a list with 2 Terminator squads in raiders, 3 dread, a MOTF, and some Tactical squads.

Termies in raider
Honor guard in raider
3x5 tac squads in rhinos.

No dont even consider fielding that.

dont waste ur time on honor guard vanguards or command squads or devastators. and land raiders w/termies are a huge game ender once i destroy them every time with something real cheap. 550 points for a land raider with termies blown up = game over

ultramarines are about reliability overwhelming firepower simplicity and balance. if you want some corn ball noobie mass land raider and termie list go play black templar
heres my list that absolutely dominates '6'' or less armies' and the mass raider/termie nonsense
it will give you an idea of what to field

what's a 6" or less army?

And FYI you have one meltagun and 4 combi-meltas... your not stopping Land Raiders all that well. Lascannons don't reliability stop AV14. If someone dumps 10 Assault Terminators on your front step your boned.

But back to the OP a Chapter will often send in a company into battle supported with other companies. So you don't need to just focus on one company to do a theme.

I guess he means armie that aren't mechanised, and so can't move more than 6". Considering Nids have other methods, thats equals...nobody.

Anyway, this list doesn't have to be super good, as long as it doesn't competely suck. Its more of a fluff list.

So I guess I could mix and match companies? So like have the 2nd company with Termies or something?

What if I dropped one Dread, got drop pods on the other 2, and replaces one rhino with a drop pod. That could open up some room for a few more marines, or at least special weapons on the squads.
