Yesterday I played my first game with my shiny new Space Wolves but a small problem popped up

Drop Pod rules says "A unit that Deep strikes via Drop pod may not assault in the turn it arrives"

Blood Claws rules says "If pack is within 6" of an enemy at beginning of the shooting phase, it must assault enemy"

With rule overwrites the other?????

If the Drop Pod rule overrules then it really sucks to take that as an option for you're Blood claws.
I had to Drop one in the first turn and what use is it to drop it in enemy zone when they can't assault? They just stand there and got shot to pieces.....

Deep striking troops may *not* launch assaults. Ever. The very few exemptions from this specifically mention that they are capable of doing so, IE. Heroic Intervention.

Therefore, the Blood Claws may not assault as they have deep struck.

The wording for the Blood Claws rule is "The Pack must attempt to launch an assault in the ensuing Assault Phase if at all possible". It's extremely clear that Blood Claws cannot assault.

Poor incorrect advice. The why is below. Just thought I'd clarify as its a common mistake, somthing I fell for.

Thats the simplest way to put it (another way would be to mention that the squad itself can't have both jump-packs and a drop-pod but that is a round-about way.) Clear and simple. HtH's.

It's 'May not assault' vs 'must assault if possible'

The 'if possible' means there is no conflict. If something is preventing them from assaulting (in this case the fact that they just performed a Deep Strike) assaulting is not possible... so they don't have to.

Then (IMHO) I dont see a good use of bloodclaws in drop pods, I thought I could drop them behind enemy lines and than assault from the rear, but if they dont get to assault they get shot down in the first turn....
If they would drop down in the third turn......

As a Space Wolf player of a 11 years, I'll let you know now, Blood Claws are useless. Grey Hunters now cost the same and are much more effective in drop pods. Unless you are running 15 BC in a LRC, don't bother with them.

As a Space Wolf player of a 14 years, I'll let you know now, Blood Claws are near useless. Grey Hunters now cost the same and are much more effective in drop pods. Unless you are running 15 BC in a LRC with an independant character or wolf guard attatched don't bother with them.

Well, nothing wrong with adding a IC AND a WG to a 14 man BC pack now, especially since Blood Claws got a 2/3 reduction in the number of fists they could take.

Agreed. The next list I'm taking to my local tournaments actually has Ragnar, 10 Grey Hunters, and Wolf Guard in a redeemer, and a Wolf Priest, 14 Blood Claws and a Wolf Guard in a Crusader.

The way to survive drop podding is to put more than one pod near each other. Give them too many targets to shoot and they can't shoot at them all. But, like the others said Grey Hunters are better than Bloodclaws in the current edition. In the way you used them a grey hunter squad would have at least been able to shoot.

I only have two of them and one have to be dropped down at the first turn, the second one is still a suprise whenn it drops

You know that you can use BC models as GH with no modification? GH have Bolters, BP AND a CCW, so just make sure it's clear that the unit is GH and you are fine. I myself have a unit of GH with just BP and CCW, because that was an option for them in the old codex.

You can, as well, mix up the models, so some have Bolters and some have BP and CCW. That way its obvious they CANNOT be BC.

I am a huge fan of Pack Markings for my models, if they are red and black they are Grey Hunters. Easiest way to convert your BC to GH and be totally legit.

I have something like 80 power armored bodies that have a mix of bolters, bolt pistols, special (non heavy) weapons, CCWs, special CCWs, etc, and I think ive used every guy (other than bolter marines) as Blood Claws, Grey Hunters and Wolf Guard at some point.

I generally only repaint the pack markings when I have a set army list that I am planning on using for a GT, for local tournaments I just organize the groups into like-pose models (all the guys running with CCWS are Blood Claws, all the static marines with bolters are Grey Hunters, all the special CCW marines are Wolf Guard with power weapons, etc)
