Sadly I had the opportunity to settle a grudge against my throng by the vampire Volker von Carstein, but suffered another defeat that will need to be settled.
I brought:
Thanvar Aletap, Runesmith (General)
Ulf Orcrist, Master Engineer
Furgil Guntherson, Runesmith
19 Clansmen
10 Thunderers
2 Bolt throwers w/ engineers
19 Ironbreakers
18 Long Drong Pirates
He brought:
3 Vampires
20 Zombies
20 Ghouls
19 Ghouls
14 Ghouls
5 Wraiths
Banshee
The game is a part of an escalation league, and at this portion of the league the games are at 1500 points. I had a secret objective to wipe out his
BSB’s unit, while he had the secret objective of killing the enemy general. Deployment was pretty straightforward, except that I opted to deploy the thunderers, along with one bolt thrower on the temple of skulls set. The rest of the army was arrayed pretty standard.
Turn 1
I got the first turn but he used a ghoul/vampire special ability to move his ghouls forward. I send forth the clansmen, Long Drong, and the Ironbreakers. My shooting did not do much, I killed three ghouls.
He moved all of his units forward, and I can the wraiths were going straight for the warmachines. I had six dispel dice, and he still had more then me with seven. I was able to dispel most of his attempts, but he is able to raise one ghoul that I killed from the
BSB’s unit.
Turn 2
I positioned the Ironbreakers and Long Drong into a position where I could charge the
BSB’s unit. My combined shooting blasted ten ghouls and I felt confident if I can get into combat I would be able to meet my objective.
I sorely misjudged my distance and he declared two charges and both of them made it. Volker’s unit charged Thanvar while a unit of ghouls, with no hero, charged into Long Drong. Thanvar eagerly awaited the vampire, and Long Drong made a stand and shoot reaction. Bad time for my dice to fail me, I only killed two in a hail of gunfire. I again got lucky and survived his magic phase with only two dead thunderers from the Gaze of Nagash. He did manage to raise some zombies behind the
IBs. The banshee’s unit moved close enough to Ulf’s entrenched bolt thrower and killed all of his crew with her scream. In combat Thanvar issued a challenge (we get extra experience points if the character wins a duel) and the ghast accepted. Thanvar killed the ghast and the ironbreakers managed to make their saves. I won combat by two points, and watched Volker’s unit start to pop. Long Drong took quite a few hits due to the poison talons of the ghouls. He and his pirates only killed three in return. Thankfully unbreakable dwarves are nice.
Turn 3
Furgil was in a position to charge the flank of the ghouls that combated Long Drong. The two bolt thrower crews, and thunderers, made their terror checks from the banshee being to close. The war machines killed two of the wraiths, which later proved to be a bonus to Ulf. In combat Thanvar declared a challenge again, being emboldened by the death of the ghast. The two generals clashed for the next three rounds. I kept winning the combat, but only by one or two
CR points and I only popped a couple of ghouls, which he would later raise. Long Drong and Furgil wiped out the remaining ghouls.
He then charged his unit of zombies into the rear of Furgil’s unit, tying him down for the rest of the game. He also charged the lone Ulf with his banshee and three wraiths. Ulf stayed and issued a challenge; the banshee accepted. I was able to kill the banshee and win the combat with a Stalwart rune and another
CR point from experience gained earlier in the league. I popped a wraith. Furgil’s unit only killed two zombies, but it was enough to start them on the path of disintegration.
Turn 4
Not much in this turn. Combat remained locked with the exception of Ulf. He was able to sidestep the hits of the wraiths and he killed another one. Due to
CR the last wraith popped. Ulf was definitely the stand out Dawi of the game. I tried to shoot his solo vampire but she had a ward save against missile attacks and made them all.
The only real thing of note on his turn was he moved the
BSB unit closer to Long Drong. Hiss magic though really started to shine. He killed four pirates with Gaze of Nagash and brought back a bunch of ghouls in Volker’s unit.
Turn 5
Things started to go bad. I charged with Long Drong, I needed to try and kill
BSB’s unit. Shooting proved useless as I rolled double ones when trying to wound the vampire. The Thunderers did not get a chance to shoot. Thanvar lost the duel with three wounds getting through to him and the ghouls managed to kill an ironbreaker. I did not kill enough ghouls and I lost combat while being outnumbered by a fear causing unit. I did not make my insane courage roll and the intrepid ironbreakers were subsequently ran down. Long Drong killed a few ghouls, but the
BSB matched him kill for kill.
Volker set himself up for a charge against Ulf. With Thanvar dead I was missing a dispel dice and it showed this round. He had his way with the magic phase. He raised more ghouls and I realized I was not going to meet my objective. This was the sad beginning of the end. He wasted more thunderers with Gaze of Nagash.
Turn 6
Nothing went right with exception of Furgil wasting the unit of zombies; big whoop. More pirates died.
He charged Ulf, who so valiantly fought off the wraiths, succumbed to fear and fled from the vampire. The
BSB killed all but one remaining pirate, and sent them to their glorious death.
At game’s end I was once again massacred by the insidious vampire failed to settle this grudge.
