Subject: What kind of vehicles would a kroot have?

Nasty Nob on a Boar

Now I stumbled upon a thread referring to the old Kroot Mercenaries list, and I started thinking about why Kroot are seen as all feral.
If they can create this in BFG:
than why can't they create their own vehicles?
I was looking through FW new stuff and saw this:
and thought that would be a pretty cool Kroot type vehicle.
I mean they have the entire Tau armory and there's no mention of a vehicle in any Kroot lists. Any thoughts?

Based on the Knarloc, I think the kroot would be most likely to ride large dino-esque "vehicles" or carts pulled by similar beasts.

Probably something orky. Open topped and fairly fast. I can see them liking bikes that ignore terrain and 3-wheelers or quads.
Nice concept...a more high-tech version of kroot without the dino-riders would be cool.

That's what I was thinking as well. How does a race have warp technology but can't seem to be able to create a transport or better fighting creatures? Automatically Appended Next Post: Maybe I'll put a Gnarloc inside of a Skaven Doomwheel and come up with something . . .

Hate to say it, but I've always thought that the Gungans from Episode 1 were decent representations of Kroot-level tech. On one hand, you have pack and draft animals pulling carts and wagons, but the carts and wagons are packed with kickass forcefield projectors and EMP bombs. I have no idea if there are 40K-scale, Gungan toys out there that you could loot, but that's where I would try and draw my inspiration from.

Well, it's not like GW is going to make "vehicles" or the crews for Kroot anytime soon. I mean even wookies had modes of transport!

Also, pretty sure that the Warspheres are lost technology. The Kroot were once far, far, far more advanced but there's evidence that they had a civilization destroying event at some point.

Kroot society seems to rely on others for armor..
Yet they have space ships. Also what they eat effects them.
So kroot eating humans could start using tanks no?
So a low tech sorta orkish tank would serve them well I think.

But they have access to Tau Tech. They would have to see the use for them. I wish the gnarloc riders were a separate choice, then could use orc buggies pulled by Kroot Hounds instead for stand-ins.

No, they don't have "access" to Tau technology. Just because they're allied with the Tau doesn't mean the Tau give them enough of a technological base to potentially break off for themselves or become a threat to the Tau themselves.
The Tau are, for all intents and purposes, doing what they can to 'control' the Kroot species in terms of exploration and travel.

I heard the fluff explanation of the Kroot spaceships was that they ate a lot of orks once. All orks carry the genetically coded memory of how to build warpdrives, spaceships, vehicles and all the other ork tekk, but it only surfaces and develops in an individual if the clan needs mekboys to build these things. This is why a single ork that is dropped on a lonely planet can have a full blown waaagh going after only two or three generations. No need to discover or laboratory tekk, the knowledge is there. The kroot gained (parts of?) this genetic knowledge by ingesting a lot of mekboys. So theoretically they could have the genetic memeories of how to build trukks and Battlewagons as well. If that is the case, I imagine they didn't quite feel the need, because the solutions they already had to these things were sufficient. While flying between the stars was not available to them, apart from building ork-pattern warpdrives.

They had the Warspheres before encountering the Orks.
In fact, it was when the Tau encountered a Kroot Warsphere under attack from Orks that led to the Tau intervening and taking the Kroot under their protection.

The reason kroot don't use vehicles is not because they can't it's because they don't like them. Their entire philosophy is survival of the fitest. Every time they use a vehicle to cover their weakness they prevent themselves from adapting from that situation. They only use technology when there is no other choice for example they know a Kroot is never going to learn to replace a spaceship so they are ok with them. To stop themselves from getting evolutionly stuck they actualy hold their own techonolgy back. In the Tau codex it mentions how there is a lot of reasonbly high tech stuff on pech but the top kroot horde it away in their biggest city (there are even factory like places IIRC). They only use it ion the worst situation. I would assume that when mercenary bands are sent out they use better equipment This answers your first question.
As for what type of technolgy they would use in keeping with their ideas it would probably be as minimalistic as possible, it would do it's job then leave the rest to the kroot. Kroot vehicles would probably be a close to nature as possible and made as much from natural materials as possible. I would say open topped very mobile vehicles. Buggies are a possibility, but I am not sure they would like bikes. Being new to technology they may scare them.
This is a scratch built kroot land sphere that I found on the internet, which I think gets the feel perfectly. Here's a link to the construction thread: http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?showtopic=4832&st=0

Kroot are not supposed to have vehicles. they rely on their talent to eat people and steal their genes, and what good would that be if they were just blasting everything to smithereens? also, not all kroot are in humunoid form, so only like 50% of their population would be able to drive. Lastly, The kroot are jungle fighters, and favor hand to hand combat and forest terrain. If the Kroot were mounted in vehicles, they start ignoring their forest homeworld and regular lifestyle.

QFT. I have read this as well and understand the Kroot choose not to progress further in technology. Sort of following the mantra "We only make what we need and we don't need much" when it comes to technology. There is also hints at a secret mountain base on Pech but not much info on what goes on in there.

Um no.
There's no "secret mountain base on Pech".
The Kroot can broadly be compared to the Krogan of the Mass Effect universe or the Brutes of the Halo universe:
They were once a dominant power, but at *some* point they seemed to have undergone a civilization killing event.
True, there's plenty of EVIDENCE of high technology...at some point in Pech's history. But, much like the Imperium of Man, nobody knows how it works/what it does.

It doesn't say exactly that there is a base but it hints very strongly.
From lexicanum:
Outwardly, the Kroot seem to be a simple pre-industrial society, seemingly incapable of achieving (powered) flight, much less traveling through space. However, Tau observers on Pech have noted evidence that may point to an industrial base hidden on or even inside of some mountains. It's probable that the Kroot deliberately keep their general level of technology low, using it only for weapons and interstellar travel, in order to keep their species strong
I don't really see why that would be included if it wasn't at least partly true.

Were the Kroot a dominate power? Did they have a higher level of tech then what is presented? I don't remember reading that in either version of the codex.
