Does anyone here have experience using any arm mounted magnifying lenses for painting/modeling?
I tend to have eyestrain problems with my spectacles on and off, when it comes to fine detail work and long periods of time, so i'm looking into getting a magnifying set up.
For those that have used them- are there any you would particularly recommend?

there are these magnefying glasses that are on this big face thing with two pieces infront of your eyes. They look silly as hell but they work well! If I find out what they are called, I'll link you.

Aloha!

I've actually got 2 swing arm magnifiers with flourescent bulbs. Honestly, they're VERY difficult to get used to. When using a magnifying glass, your depth perception is absolutely destroyed, which means that occasionally, while you're painting, you won't be able to tell how far away from the miniature your brush is. When I use the 2 that I have, at this point, I tend to use them only for the light purposes and I don't actually look through them anymore for magnification purposes.

If you've got to get one, I would suggest getting the sort of magnified headgear that jewlers and artist restoration people use. They're not quite as bad as far as killing the depth perception, so if you have to have magnification, I'd go with the headgear style.

I fixed your typo there.

When I first started painting minis I had an arm mounted magnifying glass with a light mounted in it. I thought it would be really cool for getting to see all the details up close, but it ended up being a niussance because it kept getting in the way and I had to keep repositioning to keep what I was trying to paint in focus and not clack the ends of my brushes against it. And I didn't do any better using it than not. But as some caveats:

1) I was only just learning how to paint.
2) I have good vision and am not used to using a glass of any kind to help me see.
3) I'm extremely lazy and get easily frustrated by the addition of a few simple steps to a task.

The good thing about those magnifying glasses is they're dirt cheap, or at least they were last time I priced them. I got mine for less than $20 I think. The more expensive ones have flouresent lights that encircle the glass, but I found that if you get the cheapo ones with hothothot incadesent bulbs then you can use them as an alternate heat source to make your green stuff cure faster. Or toast your breakfast. Or burn your house down. YMMV

I have a head band magnifier that is only about 1 1/2 X. Just enough power to let me see what I need but not enough to destroy my depth perception. I use the more powerful lenses just for examining things in minute detail.

I have one that sits on the desk that was about $19 from a hobby shop. It does nothing for lighting, but it helps to see details the naked eye doesn't pick up. I have 20/20 but I still find it useful.
