Dakka, consider my words eaten; I took a look at pics of the new venerable dread frames recently and was not nice in my assessment. Now, after having built one, I have totally reversed my opinion. This thing is awesome! There's all kinds of bitz, and I was able to cover all instances of the engravings on the armor plates. There's options to make the sarcophagus into a venerable-style marine head or a standard-style vision slit with multiple options for each, you get an option to make either the four-finger round standard dreadnought PF, or a more hand-like version, and you get enough pieces to make all three arms (las-, plas-, and assault cannons). And plenty of purity seals, banners, iron crosses, little coat-of-arms shield detail bits with skulls hung on chains, etc, as usual.
Honestly, after building nothing but Black Reach Dreads for the last year, this reminded me of why I bought 3 of the first plastic Dreadnought kit when it came out; Dreads are awesome!
I have the new Killa Kans and Deff Dread frames too, which I will hopefully have built and posted by the end of the weekend. As usual with preview stuff, there's no instructions, so it will be an adventure in plastic modelling to get them done! Thankfully Orky stuff is pretty easy as long as you have the basic structure right; if anything doesn't quite fit, just throw an extra bit or piece over the gap. Done! There's a Battlewagon and a Stompa at the store that can both attest to that!
Anyway, I'm off to read through Battle Missions, see if there's anything worth plucking out for tomorrow's tournament. Thanks for looking!

Can you please take some pictures of things like the variant heads and sarcophagi plating so that we can post them in the rumors thread regarding this new kit? I think this would help some dakkites change their minds on the kit.
I personally think that dread is sexy as all hell.

Don't think it looks better than this. But it doesn't look worse.
When i first saw the old venerable dread i thought it looked good but it wasn't very 'flexible' meaning that it would not really have fitted other chapter e.g for ultramarines it would be fine because of the decorated look, and maybe black templars but have to add a little more detail to it (skulls, chains, scrolls tec.) to give it a crusader like look. But it would be difficult with any other chapters like imperial fists, white scars and raven guard.
I had hoped that they would release a new model of venerable dreadnought that still looked decorative, but still look like they belong to that specific chapter.
You get what i'm saying? I maybe will still buy the old model ('cause i play Ultramarines) but i am still going to buy this one here. I get what you mean by 'older'
Oh yeah and its plastic (thank god).

No offense taken, but 2 things:
1: That glue will stand out when the dred is painted.
2: Everyone is entitled to opinions, and I just don't think it's really anything all that special.

His post is about the Dreadnought mini in general, not the one he has created. Besides, don't believe he asked for an opinion on his model.
That aside, Im not a fan of the Dreadnought but its good to hear that it comes with lots of optional pieces. Good stuff.

Well, your right it isnt special, its more of a huge relief for most people with space marine armies becuase it plastic and comes with more parts for the creative mind. (like mine )
johnstewartjohn wrote:Like the kit but the head still seems too small.
?? Its a space marine head that comes with the kit. It is meant to be the same size of one.

No paint yet, it's for the boss so when I do get paint down it will become a Black Templar. I'll get some pics of the variant pieces tomorrow so everyone can see the options.
I'll put up shots of the new Ork stuff too, with options, once I figure out how to build them!
I'll try to be more accurate with my glue work too; heaven forbid my month-early preview pictures offend anyone else with such shoddy workmanship!

I Agree the head is just lost in this model, it may represent the fallen space marines helmet but its just not working...

^ I agree, I've never been a fan of the Dreadnoughts with standard SM heads; I'm a purist and I love the blocky sarcophagi with simple riveted vision slits. I built this 'Venerable' style since 1. It's kinda the way you're supposed to; 2. The boss already has two standard-style dreads and this is for his army; and 3. I wanted to do something different.
I actually ended up liking the fact that with the helmet head you have the opportunity to add a little actual motion to the pose, instead of just having it implied.

Fluffwise, is the helmet supposed to literally be the fallen marine's actual helmet, or is this just a dread variant with a sensor array that's symbolically made in the shape of a marine helmet?
Either way, I like it - a well-chosen helmet swap will make an easy chapter-specific (including Chaos)version. Hmm, a Terminator head might look good in there too... And so would an ork head - anyone for a looted dread conversion?

I like the model a lot. I saw it in person yesterday and it really is amazing. Personally I think all that glue showing all over the place really ruins the model though man. I mean come on, it's not like you can shave it off before painting it. Plus all those other pictures posted of the brand new not yet released dread built by other people are more carefully built with out glue showing. Oh wait that's right there aren't any other photos, and excess glue can be shaved off easily before painting... Good work on the model.

Great looking model. I've always been jealous of loyalists because of their wide selection of cool dreadnoughts (and of course the controllable aspect of their rules). I'm hoping when the 5th ed csm codex comes around we get some new models/rules. Even if not, I may get one of these if I can find one cheap just because of how badass it looks.
Also, what is up with people derailing cool threads with petty bs? It has been happening more and more lately. Take it to PMs or just be the better person and not reply if someone is being aggressive.

As requested, here's some shots of the bits I didn't use. The shots are a little grainy, I'm not as facilitous with closeups on this kind of stuff. You should get the general idea though.
There's two other heads, one looks like a DA/ BT style helmet, and one has that front grille that reminds me of Iron Warriors or Imperial Fists:
Here's the other sarcophagus front if you're going with the helmet-head route:
And here's the standard-style sarcophagi with a shot of the vision-slit bit for the top:
Here's the other leg greave fronts (I am waay not a fan of the engraved battlezone names. Does a Dread have to complete a checklist of warzones before they can apply for venerable status?):
Here's some more armor-plate options:
Finally some of the leftover detail bits:
There's plenty of iron crosses and extra purity seals and so on, though I was a little disappointed that all the purity seals are the same; I remember the DA Ravenwing kit had a bunch of seals in all sizes and lengths... I'm a big fan of long fluttering vestment-type details on stuff like this.
All-in-all I think it's a good kit, and whether or not you like the helmet-head concept, the fact that so much of the kit is modular and you have so many options it should open up plenty of conversion opportunities, though there's plenty of imperial nonsense to scrape off/cover up/defile for chaos conversions. I figure this kit comprise the basic framework of any Blood Angel Dreadnought kit we get (if any!).
On to the Orky Dreads!
Thanks for looking!

Awesome looking model. It is nice to see the plasma cannon arm finally, too. Though this dread doesn't come with a missle launcher arm, too, does it?
Btw, I'd like to see an autocannon arm too. Then they would have an arm for every possible dreadnought weapon.

Only problem is the multi metal arms aren't freely available unless you purchase them from forgeworld. We need a plastic Multi Melta arm then dreads would be sweet.
Definately considering getting one of these to compliment my SW Venerable Dread from Forgeworld instead of a Second SW dread.
