Hey guys, I'm looking to stray away from my space marines and into fantasy, but seeing how so many models are being redone right now, I'm very skeptical about what army to start.... I don't want to start a new army only to find out a couple months later I'll need to replace my models.... I know Skaven and Beastmen are safe bets..... What's the safest elven army at this point? What armies won't be having too much changed to them soon? Any good places to go to where I can see what will be released this year or anything like that?

Thanks a lot for any info guys!

Vampires, Warriors of Chaos, Lizardmen, Empire and Wood Elves have all received new models in the past few years.

Rumors point to Ogre Kingdoms (or Tomb Kings) being the next release. After that - High Elves and Britonnia would have the oldest books. Dark Elves received new models a few years back, but I don't think the army book was updated. Demons are relatively new - but expect some sort of Nerf to hit this army eventually.

Right on, thanks for the info! Ya, I'm more worried about the models changing than new books coming out since they're easily replaced. Will high elves be getting replacements soon as far as models go? Or is it just their book that will be getting an update?

Thanks again!

With GW, a new army book always equals new models. That's why GW makes new books - to sell the models.

I would guess that High Elves are going to get a new army book at the end of 2010. The current 8th ed rumor has High Elves in the starter box. Usually when an older book gets figures in the starter, a new army book will follow in a few months. The HE plastics are getting old too - Archers and Spearmen came out around 2001.

Uh, Dark Elves got a new book fairly recently, and it's the awesome.

As mentioned, Dark Elves did get a full book. Also note- High Elves are still newer than Dwarfs, Orcs and Goblins, and Wood Elves, so you should theoretically see all those updated before High Elves. However, I do feel like the High Elf range is due for some updates. Whether or not they get them is another question.

Finally, to the OP: I personally wouldn't worry too much about a new model possibly coming out. I don't much care for the latest daemonettes for instance, but thought the prior generation were some of the best that GW has made. So if you like a particular current model, go for it. No need to replace when a new book arrives.
