My instinct tells me no, but I cant find anywhere in the codex that limits this.

Specific instance: Colonel Iron hand straken comes with a CCW. CCS upgrade option says "The company commander may exchange his laspistol and/or close combat weapon for... various choices."

Can I buy him a power weapon? If not, can anyone point me to where it restricts this so I can check it out?

Thanks.

P.S. I know for example in the DH codex for Coteaz it says "you must field coteaz with this exact load out" etc. I dont see that here, but Im sure im just overlooking something.

Thanks.

Simple.

Colonel "Iron Hand" Straken is not a Company Commander.

Note that the Codex states you can replace your Company Commander with Straken, not that you can take Straken as your Company Commander.

Straken himself has no upgrade options. However, a unit-wide upgrade - such as carapace armour - can still be taken, and will still benefit named characters.

Some codices (for example, Space Wolves and Daemons) do allow for upgrades to named characters, but in those instances it is clearly marked in the special character's section of the army list.

Did some more searching and found this post

In which they suggested that a unit wide upgrade (such as camo cloaks) would work for a named character. They didnt go into the specifics of named characters specifically upgrading their own (not squad) gear, so still not sure.

Edit: I posted that while Aelyn was typing.

Does not replacing your company commander implicitly make him the company commander? Hes not just some random guy in the CCS eh?

I play IG as well.......but unfortunately because he doesn't have an "Options:" list attached to his selection on pg. 91, he only gets the items listed under his own "Wargear".

This is the case with pretty much every codex in 40K. If a particular unit entry has "Options:" next to it, then they may proceed with upgrading.

Most IC have their own set of stuff they get, which is usually cooler than most of the selectable stuff anyways.

I could agree with the "unit wide upgrade" working. That's a good point.....never thought of that. thanks.

Yes, if they have a Whole Unit option, they can, otherwise no.

Replacing him does make him the Company Commander, in terms of the role he plays in the force, but he is not a "Company Commander Model" which is a very specific thing, and the only thing entitled to use the Company Commander upgrades in the CCS.

It's the same reason that an Apothecary in a SM Command Squad can't take the upgrades offered to Veterans, while logic dictates that the Apothecary would be a veteran, the squad consists of models called Veterans and a model called an Apothecary, and only the ones bearing the correct name can take the upgrades for Veterans.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).
