Hello. I just started running an IG mech army and I have had some people tell me that the "hatch" is the back of the chimera while others say it's the top hatch. This is a very big diff so I'd like to get it right. thank you.

That big square hatch in the back is generally recognized as the fire point for the chimera. Or do they think that 5 guys can fire out of the turret hatch?

I just hoped they were all shooting from the lasgun ports :/. So i have to point the rear of the chimera at someone to shoot?

The one on top of the vehicle, right above the lasgun ports, not the one on the back end. ou pop open the hatch, stick your head and gun out and shoot. If the hatch is glued shut, you just measure from the edges of the hatch.

this is easy to say.
it says in the 'dex
in reality, the inner soldiers fire from the lasguns attached to the chimera, but for the sake of simplicity they fire from the hatch
this raises another question.
If you're firing from lasguns, are you allowed to fire a plasma rifle, for example?

Yes, you can fire plasma guns, meltaguns, whatever. Heck, a platoon command of five models can fire 4 plasma guns and a plasma pistol out. My favorite is four flamers...............

Not that you can actually fire flamers out of a chimera, as you have to place the template in contact with the hatch but can't voluntarily place the template over a friendly model, and seeing as there will always be a bit of overlap with the chimera hull no matter where you place it, it can't be fired. </TFG>

Not that you can legally fire a flamer at all, since you have to place the template touching the firing model but can't place it touching any friendly models, with no exceptin made for the firing model. But that's just silly RAW.......................

I had never considered that point about flamers coming out of transports. My friends and I have always played that you could shoot the flamer out, but you're right that RAW doesn't allow that. Are flamers generally allowed to fire out of transports at tournaments and such?

You also, by RAW, wouldn't be able to fire at anything below the roof of a vehicle where the firing point is on said roof, because they are set in from the sides, so when determining LOS from them you couldn't possibly see down.

Drunkspleen: It depends on the size of the models in question. An Ogryn firing out of the Chimera could see much closer to the side of the tank than a guardsman. So it depends on the height of the shooting model, and how close the target model is to the tank. =D

I only use flamers out of open-topped vehicles (Dark Eldar), so that's easy to do . . . But yes you could argue that due to RAW you can't fire a flamer out of a rhino or chimera. =]

Honestly, if someone told me I couldn't fire flamers out of a chimera, I would hurt myself laughing
Of course, I have yet to encounter a TFG who took the game *that* seriously.

The height of the firing model is irrelevant. You draw LOS from the hatch, not from where the firer's head would be if it were sticking out the hatch.

You draw line of sight from the model's eyes, or the barrel of the gun on a vehicle. So that would mean height would matter. =]

Not when firing from a vehicle firing point, you don't.
Have a look at page 66: "Fire Points"... second paragraph.
