Hi all,
i have been a long time lurker on dakka but this is my first ever blog/post - please go easy on me!!!
i am looking to playing my bro at a bit of necromunda over the summer and as such have begun building up a gang ready, i thought that starting this "blog" might encourage me to keep going and not give up - something i am a little bit prone to when it comes to warhammer i must confess! i'm one of the people who ends up collecting about 4 different armies as i quite like the minis! hopefully maybe a bit of scenery may also be in order at some point in the future as well!
anyways, I'd like to introduce my first ganger (or heavy to be precise!);
fingers crossed the pics will have appeared above! i also have Straken to paint up as my gang leader. with regard to other gangers, currently i plan to maybe use Gaunt's Ghosts as the mainstay of my gang - but thats not set in stone as yet!
comments and criticisms are more than welcome - in fact are requested!!!!
i hope someone out there my find this useful or maybe give someone like me before, a little bit of inspiration - even if its only to pass the time
Mike.

Welcome to Dakka
I have to say that your painting is pretty impressive. I would certainly be interested in seeing the rest of your gang, and any terrain you make to play over.

Welcome and... wow. I really really like the face and eyes. When I paint eyes, it looks like crap.
There's one thing I don't like: the green grass. But, it's only my little crusade against the green grass .
And one thing you should improve: the boots.

well thanks for your kind replies guys - i'll do my best to answer any questions etc (if i can of course ) i can see what you mean about the grass, but i just felt the base was missing something - this is the first time i have ever tried to do anything that isn't just flocking and drybrushing so they are very much work in progress. the boots are highlighted a little - i drybrushed a codex grey/black mix then drybrushed codex grey lightly, followed off by about 2/3 washes with baddab black - i have real problems highlighting black (i can't ever seem to get it right) but the pics don't really show them up too well.
he is hopefully the first of "munda" themed gang based around an ex-army type gang of at most 10 men, the rules for which i am hoping my bro will be able to help me with, as i mentioned the gang will be for use in games with him and maybe another mate. i'll have to speak to him about them in my detail nearer the time, but i have been given a pretty much clean canvas to go out and get the models i want to paint so it's gonna be a shamelessly vein gang

Everything just great as all the people say, but since you ask for help and all, i have to tell you...
Chop off the imperial eagles from the mini, this is necromunda, it way easier to have a knife from home, than getting and extra special assault knife from the imperial guard.
What i mean is... be a gang menber!!!

Nice start to your gang, good clean paintjob on that one. Really like the scenic base you've given him too, fits well with Necromunda. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

He looks really good man,a nice clean paintjob. The grass is a little out of place for the underhive IMO. But thats already been brought up. And i think he would look sweet with some tattoos. Or a scar or two,but thats just me. Keep up the good work.
Im a rookie Necro player myself. And will most certainly be keeping an eye on this thread.

hi again guys!
apologies for the delay in the update, things have been getting away from me lately! bit of an update - i have now painted Straken who i am planning on using the gang leader (unless of course some other particularly cool model comes along! ) the flesh didn't go quite as well as on Harker - as you can probably see he looks a little bit too bright, a result of too much coverage at the dwarf flesh/bleached bone stage. The eyes also went a little bit wrong, i can't quite put my finger on exactly what is wrong with them - other than they don't look right, i thought maybe the pupil was a little bit slanted??
I also guess i can't hide/not mention the grass on his base - i know i know, after all i said! the reason it's appeared again is purely that i did his base at the same time as harker (in terms of flocking/glueing rubble) so it was too late to go for a dramatically different base, but also in light of Harker's base i thought a little bit of grass wouldn't be too bad - wrong call??? i will make a bit more of an effort on the next gangers i promise!! - on which subject, i still haven't made up my mind who/what is next, so it may be a bit longer untill my next update. i welcome suggestions, as i mentioned previously i am going for a gang of specialist types (like a rubbish version of the A-team!) so was thinking along the lines of maybe a medic model or using a ratling as a sniper - who knows at the mo, but ideas are very welcome.
anyway enough babbling, c&c's welcome as previously - have inlcuded a front, back and group shot;

On the flesh, you've got two options to tone it down. The first is to make him paler by using bleached bone and white to give some paler highlights, use them sparingly and you should be able to get a good effect. Alternatively, use something like Bestial brown (or whatever it's called now) to tone down the flesh by blending into the washed recesses a bit.
I'm still really liking how crisp and bright your paintjobs are, but I think some more attention to blending on your skintones would improve matters to no end. Having said that, the camera can lie a bit and make some paintwork look less detailed than it is, so it might just be that.
Really good work on the camouflage too, it looks suitably in scale
Finally, keep the grass. I don't think the grass is a bad thing on these bases because you've used it sparingly. It looks like scraggy grass, the sort of stuff that's alive but nobody knows why and is likely to grow places nothing else will. Maybe it's rootless couch grass?

thanks for your positive comments guys- it means a lot!!
elfboy - i don't think the camera does quite capture it correctly, i'm hardly David Bailey in the making, but at the same time i am more pleased with how Harker's flesh came out compared to Straken - still it's all good practise at least i'll know for next time to go easy on the bleached bone . also thanks for the camo compliment - it has taken me a long time to "discover" (if that's the right word!) the combination - i have spent so long trying different patterns out including the ones on GW's website but none of them quite cut the mustard imo. i agree on the grass, i quite like a bit on there, not too much tho, don't want my gang to look as if they are strolling through a meadow!!
vlad - any thoughts on future models to use?? i am thinking maybe an old type ratling as a sniper, but can't really decide on much else, do you (or anyone else for that matter!) have any ideas?
Mike.

Seeing as you've kind o gone down the big muscle kind of look with your gang you could have a look at the necromunda pit slave gang (some awesome minis in there) or i'd go with the catachan plastics and do some converting...
though if you want some more unique characters, i'd probably look at Schaeffer's Last Chancers or even an ogryn...
You should have a look at all the Inquisi-munda (=I=munda) blogs for some good conversion ideas, personally i got loads from here and here - seems like i have Migsula to thank really
hope that gives you some ideas
