Wanted to put some feelers out about 40k armies. I have been a long time WHFB player but have neglected to step into the realm of 40k. I recently unearthed quite a bit of old Eldar models i had stowed away. Turns out its enough for about 900- 1k points.

Before i start the process of building a new army or expanding on the eldar force i wanted to get some opinions on the different 40k teams. I.e. most fun, most boring, most flexible, overpowered, under powered etc.

Well it depends on your play style, Eldar can be very flexible, but they're an army of specialists, each unit does one thing very well and sucks at the rest. They're also the classic glass cannon, being very fragile but powerful.

they're not really seen as a newbie army, and the current codex is rather limited in viable builds (mostly mechanized and with large seer councils seem to be popular).

I'd avoid Dark Eldar, Necrons, Daemonhunters & Witch Hunters armies for starting a new one, as the rules are two editions out of date at this point, and the models are frustratingly unavailable.

I'll let other dakkites discuss the relative merits of the other armies for you. I will say, please don't play Space MArines, everybody seems to have a Space Marine army of some type and it's inevitably very dull.

Agreed SM can be very dull after you have played against them for two games straight in a tourney. Also agree with the setiments about eldar DE DH necrons and WH. Orks i think are possibly one of the best (personal opinion of course) because they are one of the most flexible armys. You want shooty put 90+ boys on the table with shootas. You want assaulty change those 90+ boyz into choppa slugga. Mech throw 12 boyz in a trukk and have 6 squads of them and have a ton of points left over.
They also have a slight bit of randomness that makes you and your opponent laugh when it happens. Zogwort can change ICs into squigs on the roll of two dice for example.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

Alas i am primarily a Skaven player and the O&C in WHFB. I almost get more enjoyment out of my Skaven vaporizing my own units than my opponents. So Orks may be a good way to go.

I do have a Sizable Daemons of Chaos army that can double for a 40k line up. Though i am unsure how they would actually perform in a game. In WHFB they are rigged to the point i seldom play them so as not to demoralize my gaming opponents. How do they do in 40k?

They can be kinda random you divide your army in half and roll to see which half deepstrikes in first but other than that they CAN be a powerhouse. Most of the army is assault oriented minus the Tzeentch daemons so they are a pretty straightforward army to play.

Daemons can be wildly entertaining to play. Plenty of variety in units and army builds, too. They take a bit of finesse to master...but once you've got a handle on deepstriking, you're golden.

Orks have a lot of character. Daemons and Chaos, for me, also have a good "feel" to them.

Dark Eldar, simply because you can fit 30 Dark lances into 1500 Points and 23 into 1000.

Orks have some of the oddest special rules, and you'll generally be rolling a ton of dice. Also, you can convert just about anything to be orky.

Daemons are a total different flavor of fun with the entire army deepstriking in. Throw in Scarbrand to allow all assaults within 24" to be rerolled and you'll have a blast.

Eldar when playing Eldrad & his psychic shenanigans can be "fun". However it takes a while to truely master Eldar.

If you a looking for a "fun" army I'd go with deamons or orks.

Orks yield extremely random results, but you can do just about anything with them, making them extremely fun, and with my dice rolls very easy to win with .
My friend plays Imperial Guard (Lazy). It's very reliable, just not too much fun.
Space marines are over-played, but good.
Eldar are VERY specialized and can be kinda hard to play
Necrons are good, but in my opinion under-powered
Tau has potential, but in general is pretty bad
Tyranids put everything into monstrous creatures which could be bad
Chaos is great, but if you have bad reserve rolls then your effed

Obviously it varies with personal taste but I'd have to reccomend either orks, marines, space wolves, chaos space marines, tyranids or imperial guard.

All of these armies have a wide range of options in their codex and quite a few different viable builds. That offers you a lot of scope to play around with playstyles and find something that works for you and is "fun."

Orks, Chaos, Nids and IG also offer a lot of scope for conversion opporunities if that's your thing.

Chaos, Wolves and Space Marines have small body counts so you can get a decent army up and running quickly if that's important.

Orks and Nids ahve lots of randomness and special rules which can be "fun."

I'd avoid DE, Witchunters, daemonhunters and Necrons as all of them have rules conflicts or issues with the current rulebook. Also a lot of these only have a few good units and 1 viable build.

Similarly eldar and tau have a wide variety of units but a lot of those units are utter crap. There are only a few good choice sin each book so you'll feel constrained in what you can play.

And nobody enjoys using Dark Angels.

Orks seem pretty straight forward to play: get a bunch of boyz for a super cheap amount of points and send them forward.

Tyranids have gone from one of the most boring to the most fun in the game in my opinion. I love them.

Orks are the most fun army.

They have the most fun and funny fluff to read. They do amazingly fun and funny stuff in game. You blow up my ork trukk and are like, "HA! Exploded!" And I say, "HAHA!! I actually careen into your unit and explode into you!"

Ive had that happen more then a few times. Its hilarious. Kind of a last F you!

Im bias, but I love the Orks. They are fun, can be serious ass kickers if done right, and you can convert some incredibly awesome things for the Orks. And yea the fluff is rich and great. Ive bought the codices from the past just to be able to read the fluff.

It depends on your idea for fun.

In the last chaos codex, my sheer amount of daemons and fluff in my army made them fun to play. Now they're dull and sub par.

I've recently switched to Tau from SW as well and have realized I love them more than even my old CSM. They have a completely new playstyle which is amazingly fun to play if you enjoy tactics and their model range is delicious.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Edinburgh.

Guard rock if you are into fire power. I like them because they have around 13 tanks and their main tank (the leman russ) has about 7 variations. They're fun to play for exactly that reason. Also I think they are the only army in 40k that have 2 different ways to have 50+ man squads.

All Between 750 and 3000 points: Nids, BA, Imperial Guard, Space Wolves, Orks, CSM, Tau, Ogres, Vampire Counts, Daemons, Skaven, Empire.

This is pretty much it for me. I love the fantasy'ish feel that they can sometimes evoke, even though I dont play WFB, I love fantasy, and the way these two races incorporate it into the gothic sci-fi-verse of 40k is what I like about them alot. However, your own personal playstyles will dictate what you find to be fun. Im a close combat junkie, which is another reason why I chose to play the two, although both races can create varied and different lists, and are quite versatile in that regard. At the very least however, SW are more of an elite army, incase I get tired of moving a horde of greenskins around.

I like how Orks work, they can be really shooty and generaly miss allot but im pretty lucky with my dice, and they work great in CC. Plus theres the added bonus of just running up on some SM (Necrons, IG, ect.) and punching them in the face, good times
