Hey,

I'm just getting back into the hobby after being out of it since 3rd edition where i played tyranids mostly after starting on blood angels, but sadly my army at that time got a pair of legs and walked off. so i am starting fresh, and am currently between deciding on which army to collect, i ruled tyranids out since the codex doesn't speak to me as much as it did back in the day.

So it's down to two, Dark Eldar or Death Guard. I've read over the 5th rule book and have been reading the respective codices, but am wondering on a few things. cost, which force may be cheaper? either way i think most of my troops choices will be mounted in a transport. tactics, since i've been out for a while, how difficult are dark eldar to use effectively, one of the things that appeal to me about death guard, is i'd probably be able to make my fair share of mistakes and still be ok. and general support, ive been hearing since before 4th edition that a new dark eldar codex was right around the corner so i don't really care about that and have gotten over it.

so basically im just looking for some advice and some opinions on the merits and downsides of either force. and as fickle as i am may just jump on the nid bandwagon again. who knows.

thanks.

I recently returned to the game too after many years away, and the advice I got was that Dark Eldar are way too outdated (codex is 2003 I think) and very tough to play. Add to that the the models don't look too great either and you'll see the reason I decided to go with Chaos Space marines instead . I'd waiting very impatiently for them to update the Dark Eldar but I think it's going to be a long wait :(

What every you do, dont do Dark Eldar unless GW says "Yes, there will be a DE update in X months." Otherwise, you get outdated stuff galore. Nids and Chaos both sound like great ideas. You might want to read through the nids codex again. there little shock and awe period is looking to last longer than most. I believe though, that a Deathguard army uses the metal Deathguard models, so it gets price.

Pat that askala, O-H-I hate this stupid state

I agree with my fellow posters about DE. Way outdated models and codex. Happygrunt brought up a good point with the plague marine models though all metal. No sweat though just buy the regular CSMs box and convert to your liking. First of all easier to convert these guys since they are plastic. Second it is cheaper for those 10models than 8 of the plagues. Last you have an army once you are done that looks different than everyone elses.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

GW did say this.

They *are* the next codex after Blood Angels. A bit of internet research would do you well.

I heard that back in 2006 too. so yeah. ok. I put zero faith in what GW says about DE until it is on real physical paper print in my hand.

as for Death guard, yeah i planned on buying the plastic CSM box and then just converting for two reasons, cost, and special weapons(meltas, plasmas).

I will give the tyranid codex another run through to see what i'm liking. Death guard have always appealed to me so i may just do that.

edit: a link would also be nice.
