Every unit entry tells you their Stats , special rules , their current gear equipped , and how many points they cost
Then , if permitted to buy / change / switch with other gears , they'll tell you the points required.

Then add everything together!

Tell me what codex you are reading and having trouble with

Rather an abbraisive introduction, but welcome. Lunahound is correct, you simply look at your models, work out what they have and add the points together for all of them. Is it that confusing?

Well, if you look under Chaplain in the HQ section of the codex you'll see the options and their points cost.

In the Webway.

Often units have an upgrade. For example, in the Orcs&Goblins codex you may want to include some big 'uns, but, no matter how hard you look there's no unit entry for them. In fact, it's an upgrade for most units of orcs, simply look in the relevant entry and it'll say "upgrade to big 'uns +4pts". Otherwise it's just as simple as Lunahound makes out.

And welcome to Dakka!

This. Chaplains are on page 100 of the space marine codex. They cost X points. You then replace power armour and weapons with terminator armour and weapons for Y points cost. Add the cost of the chaplain with the cost of the upgrade to calculate his points cost (X+Y=points cost).

Hi tormented90,

Sometimes it helps to talk to someone in person, too... whoever gave/sold you the codex can probably point out really well how to add up unit costs with options, characters with wargear, etc.

And yes, please always helps

Okay, first of all, punctuation and capital letters are your friends. They want to help you be understood better. Second of all, explaining the problem clearly will get you a clearer answer.

Other than that, welcome to Dakka Dakka. Flame GW, and don't feed the trolls.

Luna answered the question straight off so you should be fine now. There will be other things like upgrdes that add to the cost of the model. Some have a point cost for the unit and will say how many models you get in that. Others will give the cost for the individual models themselves and you'll have to work it out for the squad price.

They will give the minimum ammount of models needed to make a squad, and also the maximum. Once you have the basic cost for the unit sorted, you can buy upgrades and add their cost to that squad's cost, don't forget you have to model these on as well. Some will replace existing equipment, while some won't. Then once you've finished working on that squad, remember it's total (writing them down one by one is really the best way to do it, obvious I know ). Then work on the next squad. Finally you add up the final point cost you came to for all those units and that will give you the points total for your army.

Usually the price will be in the top right courner of that squads entry. For the newer ones they have two sections. One at the front with no points and just the rules in more detail and some background story about them. While the actual list of stuff you get to chose from should be in the back past the pictures. That one will have all the point costs for everything in that codex. Also their stats will usually be in a rectangle.

You'll get it eventually, I know when I first started back in 2005, the 4th sm codex was fairly annoying to me too. But if you look over it a little bit you'll get it.

Then once you've built up your first list take it over to the army list section and they'll give you tips on it.
