Downing Street dismisses US offer to mediate on Falklands dispute
Downing Street has dismissed an American offer of help in resolving Britain's dispute with Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

Published: 6:38PM GMT 02 Mar 2010

"We don't think that's necessary," the Prime Minister's spokesman said after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton indicated Washington's readiness to step in if required

"We welcome the support of the Secretary of State in terms of ensuring that we continue to keep diplomatic channels open but there is no need for that (direct involvement).".

"He emphasised that we have a strong ongoing working relationship with Argentina, particularly around G20," Mr Brown's spokesman reported back from the weekly meeting at Downing Street.

But the UK believed the oil drilling was "both the right thing to do and is entirely legitimate".

Argentine president Cristina Fernandez earlier asked for US help sorting out the renewed sovereignty dispute under a United Nations framework set up after the 1982 war.

Mrs Clinton, on a visit to Buenos Aires, said the row should be resolved between the two countries but "if we can be of any help in facilitating such an effort, we stand ready to do so".

The heightened tensions were sparked by Britain allowing Desire Petroleum to begin drilling 60 miles north of the islands after Argentina announced new shipping controls.

Its Ocean Guardian rig was towed 8,000 miles from Scotland to the South Atlantic isles, which Argentina calls Las Malvinas and accuses Britain of occupying illegally, for the exploration.

Argentina invaded the *Falklands* in 1982, before a UK task force seized them back in a war which claimed the lives of 255 British servicemen and women and more than 600 Argentinians.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Obama is snubbing us, but the Hilary is helping the Argies, great.

Its Argentina that wants talks, which means 'keep it on the agenda until we get our own way'. Stuff that, the residents have already spoken, there is nothing to talk about. They overwhelmingly want self determination and no Argentinian rule.

I thought they understood democracy over in Washington. This is an open-shut case.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I know this sounds naive, but why not just let them make their own mind up, instead of being argued over by two controlling parents?

They already did, the decided they wanted to be Brits. The Argies just can't take a hint.

Evidently they can't take a torpedo either.

We have a long history of supporting democracy on a purely conditional basis: Egypt, the Israeli OT, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, etc. All either feature pressure on election results we don't like, or support for regimes which ignore central elements of the democratic process.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

And many thanks for the offer, but we're quite capable of telling the Argies to knob off all on our own.

That's cheating, you're British.

An interesting idea... if anyone has been sucking my balls lately I didn't notice it so how can I know if it ever happened or not? CCTV tapes?

On balance I suspect my balls are sadly unsucked but perhaps it is better to live in hope than to know certain disappointment.

That's your Imperial Thought For The Day right there.
