Boom! Leman Russ Commander

I have an idea to write a short story about a severly depleted squad of the marines which is trapped behind lines and they want to reach the friendly teritorry so I need some advice how to start.
1)Would it be right if the sergeant activated the power field of the power sword when he was fighting heavily armored enemies and when he was fighting lightly armored enemies he would turn it off.
2)The marines would resort to stealh tactics to avoid enemies and to attack them.
3)Squad would use lasguns and they would carry the bolters since they would not like to lose them.

Wouln't the marines most likely rather resort to close combat than fighting with lasguns? I would think that they would have a hard time fitting their fingers on the trigger
Plus there is something cool about marines doing stealth attacks with just fists and combat knives

It has been varified by John Hurt that the Ultramarines are indeed the greatest space marine chapter.
