ps- any other good anti tank suggestions would be awesometoo.
Kannon are great for their points, but only at lower points values. At higher points levels you often don't have the spare heavy slot, and as the other guy is able to afford more big guns your kannon will go from 'surpisingly survivable' to 'doomed if they're a realistic threat to anything'.
Against AV12 or less then you can just spam lootas, while they have poor
BS they put out a load of shots.
Anything higher than that and you'll struggle to get consistant effects from your shooting, and be very dependant on the dice gods. So I take micro-units of stormboyz with
pk nob, and deploy them to advance into cover in turn 1, and charge a stationary tank in turn 2 - with 4 auto-hit
St 9 attacks against the rear armour of 10 you're almost certain to get a kill - just don't expect the stormboyz to survive the next turn.
You can then add deffkoptas with a buzzsaw, I keep them with shootas to keep the points down, and come on the board flanking right into an enemy tank. With reserves rolls they're not certain to be there on turn 2 and they're only St7, they are more likely to get a charge on a tank than stormboyz, and become the better option if there's limited
LOS blocking terrain in the middle of your game board. They're also tougher and might survive for a turn, allowing them to attack another armour unit or charge an enemy infantry unit (firing
TL big shootas then having a T5 4+ save and a buzzsaw can really hammer
GEQ units).
You can do the same with bikes, and while they're tougher than the other options it is much harder to hide them from enemy fire, and they can't jump over enemy units that might be standing in front of their tanks. But they're also the most versatile option, as they can easily switch to targetting enemy troops without losing effectiveness.
