Hi there. My group and I have been flirting with the Warmachine/Hordes game for quite some time now, but we have just spent the last 4 days in a summer retreat locked in with my collection of 20 No Quarter as the only reading material so we're hooked now

But three of us had plans to start Horde, but as far as I can see MkII for horde isn't released yet. Should we wait it out 'till after the new edition, or are the starter sets already updated? (as far as I could understand, every box of minis comes with a card with rules - correct me if I'm wrong ).

Cheers

Hey, hopefully I don't give terrible advice, as I just started playing Warmachines myself.

But I dont think you really need to wait until the mk 2 rulebook comes out, you can download the field test rules and play with that until the real rulebook comes out.
Yes the boxes containing the minis do come with cards, but even after the new book is out, it will take some time until theres only boxes that contains the new cards.
So you'll have to buy the faction decks anyways (that contain all the factions Mk2 cards), which are great even if you'd only get new cards.

For example, I bought 1 Protectorate of Menoth battlegroup box + 2 boxes of choir models and a paladin. The _only_ one containing Mk2 cards was the paladin one, rest were mk1, even after the mk2 books been out for a while.
I just bought the mk2 faction deck to get the correct cards.

Thanks mate. Sounds a lot like the situation I'm right now, and didn't sound like much trouble for you guys to work around so we'll start right away

Now that I have you, was the faction deck released alongside MkII and is it known when the Hordes MkII will be released?

From what I've heard(well read) its planned to be released around mid-late summer. The faction decks should be released soon after the book. Not sure if they'll be released at the same time, but at least not much later.

Guess the only problem would be managing to learn to play the game with the field test rules. (Haven't checked the hordes one, but the warmachine was without pictures, and it might be easier to understand with pictures)
But as you can download it for free before buying any miniatures, you can try it out and see what you think

Also keep in mind the new rule book will be identical to the Warmachine one the only exception is how focus is gained and allocated. In Warmachine the warcaster generates focus and doles it out to the warjacks, while in Hordes the warbeasts generate fury(focus) and the caster pulls from that so on the pages about how focus is generated ignore that and see the field test rules other wise; movement, engagement, combat, and spell casting are all going to be identical. So you can still use the Wm rule book if you need the visual examples.
