Painting Within the Lines
|
After perusing through other poster's P&M threads I decided to start my own. I'm getting ready to finish my Space Marine army and then I'll begin painting my Imperial guard horde...
Just warning everyone up front, don't expect any golden daemons winners to be coming from this thread!
A few things I've already painted, they're just waiting for their chapter decals to show up and then they're ready to be put in the "done!" category.
A little info on why I chose this color scheme: A good buddy of mine plays Tau. I wanted a simple scheme for my first foray back into 40K and what could be easier than black and white. I knew I didn't want to play Templars so after a quick browse through the codex I noted that the Sable Swords chapter were both, black and white, AND renowned for their many victories against the upstart Tau empire. Score! Well, until 3 days later when my buddy decided to pick himself up a nid army...
TBH, I didn't really like the look of the vindicator for a long time. After several trips into my FLGS the idea of fielding these really grew on me, I think they're almost cute at this point. I used to play IG (which I'm getting back to when this SM army is finished) and I do love me some high strength ordnance, I think being one of the only pie plate throwing SM units really tipped me in their favor.
Battle taxis, I really like them with the Tac squad arrows painted on top, they really bring the room together 'nuff said
AND NOW ONTO THE STUFF THAT REQUIRES MORE WORK...
The hammer unit of my army if there ever was one. The Chaplain in terminator armor is by far my favorite model in the SM lineup. I love the fluff behind chaps in general, but throw in the terminators and it's possible a nerdgasm is close. Probably the figure I've ever spent the most time painting, I'm actually really happy with the way he came out.
The new assault terminators look incredible as well. The painted LC termie really has a "I'm about to pounce" look that I'm a fan of. Terminators were one of the units I always used going way back to 2nd ed. I couldn't imagine fielding a SM army without them, it just wouldn't feel right.
Three regular Land speeders and an LS storm. Much like the terminators, the LS has always been one of those iconic SM units to me. The storm was a great surprise to me. An LS transport? That comes with scouts hanging willy nilly all over it? Hells Yes! IMHO the storm has to go down as one of the coolest looking units GW has added in awhile. Can't wait to get these bad boys painted and assembled.
Ever since GW decided that SM scouts shouldn't have the hairdo of late 70's punk rockers I've been hooked on the models. I will admit that the thought of 7 ft. tall super humans muscle men being all "stealthy like" is kind of funny though
That's all I have left for the SM army and then it's off to the IG, love the army, I know I'm going to hate painting it though...

That's a very nice looking force so far. I'm sure when it's all painted up it will look great on the battlefield.

@Natorum- Thanks! I'm trying to power through these last few models, I can't wait to have a fully painted army on the board!
@Munch Munch!- Thank you! I've been painting minis for about a combined total of about nine months now, I picked up all of my SM stuff in late January. I've been playing 40K for almost fifteen or sixteen years, it's just now that I've gotten back into it that I've decided it's time to have a painted army.

@Death Gear: I can't wait to see more either, it'll be nice when these guys are all wrapped up!
@Leigen_Zero: Thanks, and that is absolutely a buddy christ lurking behind my monitor. He stares at me with his dead unblinking eye to make sure that I finish painting...
And now on to what I've recently finished...
It took me a little bit to get motivated to paint last weekend, I figured that my next game wasn't going to happen for at least another two weeks so I could slack off. However, I soon discovered that I have a three day weekend this upcoming weekend (SCORE!) and wanted to show my friends that I put in some effort since the last time we played.
From my comment above it's pretty obvious that I really dig the LS models, even more so seeing as how badly they wrecked two of my friends' armies the week before,
so I decided to give mine a coat of paint before their next appearance.
First I did work on the chassis and main body of the speeders...
And then I had to "do work" on this pile-o'-bitz
And in a little over a 9 hours worth of painting, a speeder squadron is born!
Watch out LR's we're coming for you...
Another side view
And finally a view of some of the cockpit interiors
For being table-top models I'm pretty happy with how they came out. Before anybody asks, there is a reason why one has a white stabilizer and airfoils. When I was in the military all of the squadrons I worked at designated one aircraft as the squadron commander's "bird". I worked on H-60 variants and the tailcones were usually painted in the squadron's colors. While I didn't want the speeder to look like a checkerboard (half white/half black) I did want to give a subtle nod to my airframing days. I think it works to show just who's running that little detachment and I'm considering it an aesthetic test run for when I get around to painting up my valkyrie squadron.
Next project up: finishing the terminator assault squad...

Do they JC models have the "I'll be back" (in three days) rule?
The Jesus models would be really cool for a Christian Exodite Eldar army, as an Avatar, which is kind of like a messiah. Walks on water, immune to 40 days of famine, brings the dead back to life, cures blindness, water to wine, feed many with a little, damning fig trees, repair severed ears, flipping over tax collector tables, premonition, move big stone, and the fact that daemons/possessed models better be worried if any pigs and a cliff are nearby would be some pretty good skills in a serious city fight.

Got some more work done over the last week or so. Finished the assault terminator unit, and tonight I finished up my 5-man scout squad. I'm getting very close to wrapping up my 2K army and short of a desire to do some conversion work (turning a non- AOBR tac squad into Sternguard) It's about time for me to move on to my IG army.
Here's some pics of the scouts (I decided to go with the bolter scouts, I like to move my squad around to much for snipers to be useful and most of my opponents play assault oriented armies that would shred my BP/ CCW scouts to pieces):
Decisions, decisions...
Full Frontal Scoutage
My guys from a different view. The one holding the chainsword is straight from my LS Storm sprue (one of two models left before this army is all done!)
Another shot
What a difference a decal makes! Few things bring an army together than a common insignia. The chapter badge decals were purchased from Greenfield Games ( http://www.greenfieldgames.com/catalog/52). If you need a unit insignia that is common to a few chapters I couldn't recommend them more, they're both affordable and incredibly quick with shipping. I had a problem ordering from their website but they took my order over the phone and had my decals across the country in a little over 3 days!
I have to admit it was a little weird painting flesh. I purposefully swapped the heads out on all of my Tac squad sergeants as I can't stand the SM rule that the less helmet you have the more important you probably are. What little practice they would have given me was lost to my aesthetic taste. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with these guys!
Next up: Land Speeder Storm and 4th squad's rhino.

So I've finally gotten around to doing something about the box of IG collecting dust in my closet. The boys were from a mish-mash of new kits, trades off the swap shop, and ebay. This meant that they came in a large variety of states of paintedness :( following the Dakka Tutorial I decided that for a good start my boys needed a bath of about an hour:
(Notice the gloves! Very important, chemical burns FTL.)
After everybody received a rigorous scrubbing with a tooth brush I followed up with a rinse in the shower. The last thing you want is your models to start foaming up when you paint them!
And the finished product:
I used Super Clean for it (if you couldn't tell) as it came highly recommended in the tutorial thread. I'm including it in the picture as I was lost on what the dang bottle looked like when I was perusing my local Wal*Mart for it!
Next on the chopping block, converting melta/plasma vets!

Painting Within the Lines
|
I'm back to having some free time after working all summer, which means it's time to paint! I hope everyone who is looking at the sea of gray (or black, or white...) that is their army can get some inspiration from watching my entire 2250+ army of IG get painted over the next month or two.
And now, a good look at the next few projects I'm starting, my Imperial Guard army, and with the release of 8th, a vampire counts army for fantasy. Without further ado I present the starting point for my IG army:
The infantry part of the horde. What's hard to see is the metal plasma and plasma guns from GW's bitz bins. If you're looking for some yourself, you can find them here and here
Now a glimpse of the tank section of the horde, 5 chimera (3 HF/HF and 2 ML/HB), 2 LR demolishers, 1 LR executioner, 1 LRBT, and 1 LR punisher.
and last but not least, the real reason any new player jumps into the IG, AIR CAV (note the vendetta conversion...)
I hope you enjoy following this blog, my goal is to have it updated with each week's worth of painted goodies as it goes along. Of course, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to voice them down thread!

And two weeks into painting my IG, I think I'm off to a strong start, which is a good thing as I now have a deadline and motivation. Veteran's day weekend means my IG and SM face off against two of my friends' chaos armies in a 5K apocalypse battle!
So how are things coming along? Let's take a look...
Here's "the old man" of the army, the Senior Officer in one of my CCS. I wanted a "deserty" color scheme as I am tired of fighting city battles and painting gray and black urban camo.
One thing I wish I could paint was eyes for my guys, but speed painting does take its toll on those small details...
Next up is the astropath for the CCS, a veritable necessity to make sure that those outflanking vets in vendettas show up in a timely manner.
Note to self, get a tri-pod.
Of course, no IG army would be complete without a ridiculous amount of treaded vehicles and mine is no exception. Here's 5 of my 7 chimeras (I haven't gotten around to one of them yet and the other is in the mail).
And a more detailed view of them
I had to slightly convert the one on the left as I was out of turret mounted HFs. I think it came out alright...
Of course, what IG army would be complete without some Leman Russ love? Pictured below are my solution to infantry in any situation, the Leman Russ Punisher, the bane of horde infantry and Armor 10 everywhere, coupled with the tank that Terminators despise, the Leman Russ Executioner.
Last but certainly not least, the biggest time and paint sink in the army, the first of my three converted vendettas. $20 in Lascannons from Ebay and a few swap shop trades saved me over $50 on FW conversion kits, overall, I'm pretty happy with the results too.
Side view
As a side note, I think this is the only army I will have ever played that does not use at least 1 large blast template. We're in strange new territory here...
Next up, 2 chimeras, 2 vendettas, and 82 IG infantrymen...
