I've just received my second order of space marine stuff, and am in the beginning stages of construction and painting. I got a decent number of magnets from GaussBoys, so my Sergeant is basically as magnetic as he can get. After magnetizing the arms, waist, and head, I decided that I didn't like the concept of the Dreadnought I had bought being permanently stuck in whatever position I eventually chose for him, so I set about magnetizing the hull.
Eventually I worked up the courage and drilled a hole through the bottom of the hull.

I knew that if I drilled a hole in the leg assembly and glued a magnet in place, I would only be able to adjust the rotation of the Dread, and I wanted maximum mobility.
Luckily, there is open space in the legs. The short tail of smaller magnets is probably not necessary, but I stuck them in there to make sure that they couldn't rattle around as much and get reversed from their original position. However the looseness of the magnets lets them move when they are attracted by the magnets in the hull, so the hull is now capable of looking to the left and right, as well as barely up and down.

The result has been better than my initial attempt that avoided drilling, as the Dread can now be turned upside down fully equipped without the hull falling off the legs. Unfortunately my camera battery died and I don't have any pictures of that yet. As of right now my plan is to do a Sons of Medusa squad and Dreadnought, adding units here and there as I get stuff done and get bored. My other option based on the paints that I have is Ultramarines, but the scheme doesn't interest me much.
Suggestions as to what chapter I should try are quite welcome, as I am rather new to painting.

It looks great. And I can't really suggest a scheme, as I don't know your style.

Mostly leaning towards Sons Of Medusa because its so bright, its really eye catching and since its a white basecoat and light green armor, my mistakes will be really obvious, so hopefully I can fix them and learn from them. Also I completely forgot that those pictures had the assault cannon on upside down, whoops.

So as it stands at the end of the night, I got part of the Sergeant done up in green, after I did part of the Dread's lascannon the same. At this point I'm 95% certain this squad is going to be SoM.

The magnet in the bottom of the head is a little bit tilted, but the slight tilt of his head makes poses like this somewhat more threatening. Obviously he needs more green, but I am fairly pleased with the results. My only worry is that the green might be a little on the dark side for SoM, but looking at grey_death's, I am so astounded I can't properly tell.

The AoBR marine in this picture is the better of the two in the paint set I tested the green white and black scheme on. The main issue I have with the dread arm, and large surfaces in general, is how should I avoid brushmarks etc, as are clearly visible on the lascannon? General tips for painting the Dreadnought would be greatly appreciated, as I am almost certainly going to have to do it without spray paint.

So as of the end of tonight, I have definitely decided to go with the SoM scheme, and gotten a fair portion of my sergeant painted. The chainsword arm is the only one that i could call any sort of done right now, but all of his right arms have got a little bit of paint on them and most of the armor is painted. He still needs a wash and some highlighting, but so far I am very happy with how he has turned out.

You can see that his left shoulder is just a pit right now, I need to get some GS to fill it back in so I can get the proper magnet in there, but I keep procrastinating about going to my FLGS and I really want to pay GW prices for the stuff. But so far, other than the shoulder issue, I'm kinda proud of this guy and his accidental swagger. I'm debating painting over the stripes on his sword, or maybe adding a couple more, so your thoughts on that, or any C&C are quite welcome.

Well you should definately invest in some spray primer.
Thin your paints down to little thicker than milk consistency and just apply alot of thin layers instead of 1 or 2 thick ones. I've never really painted a scheme that bright so props to even attempting SoM!

Spray paint is probably not going to be possible because I'm living in dorms right now, and I doubt we're allowed to be using it indoors, but any suggestions as to brands to look at would be appreciated.

Tied and gagged in the back of your car

You could use brush-on primer...

But really, just do what I do. Go outside and prime. Otherwise, you could just open a window, put some paper on the floor, and hope no one notices.

Any home depot or car parts store for spraying get a square of cardboard about 1 foot square put what you want to spray on it take it out side spray it then take it back inside till dry.
The green needs more coats of paint to clean up the blotchyness look at Grey Deaths Sons of Medusa for inspiration.

As to magnets there are easier ways

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=R422
One of these with a steel pin the same dia as the inner dia of the magnet will let it pivot and still hold it upright

If I can find a small enough fan I'm going to try to put a fan in the window and spray over my spring break. Outside doesn't really work because I live five floors up and the campus is rather neatly "manicured". Went looking for a wash kit today, my FLGS was out, but I got a bottle of Vallejo Scorpy Green, and may go back over current green using that, as it is quite a bit brighter than my current mix. I tried taking comparison shots but my camera sees both colors as basically the same.

A cheap way to do this is go to home depot get a 4 foot box fan a large box and some 4 foot square dust filters.
Make a paint booth with a large hole in the back tape this to the box fan with the fan guards on point the front away from the booth and tape it to the paint booth put it in the window and fill any window not covered by the fan with cardboard.

Well, my college's spring break is drawing to a close, and I didn't get a whole lot of work done on the infantry, but I got the dreadnought mostly painted.
I don't have all the weapons painted yet, and I still need to do some weathering and get the lights painted, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.

The targeter sort of thing on the lascannon is one bit that I'm on the fence about. I did the sergeant's in the same color scheme, darker green in the middle of lighter green, but it doesn't work quite as well on a larger scale. Any suggestions for that, and the other light type bits would be appreciated. Also I'm probably going to use a different faceplate, and the engine section is magnetized, because ideally at some point I'll get a light put in the body to shine out the eye slot.
So far on the non AoBR marines, these are the ones I have mostly done, I've been holding off on doing more until I get in actual phone contact with GW about the holes in the backpacks.

I'm mostly happy with how the first bolter and the flamer have turned out, but I don't really know what I should add to the plasma gun and the melta, both seem unfinished, but my palette is so small at the moment I don't really have enough colors to differentiate the melta colorwise.

I placed an order at bitzbarn several weeks ago that finally showed up, so I'm working on getting sentinel legs put on the dread. I also got one sprue of a venerable kit, so I have a plasma cannon now, and I scratchbuilt a new barrel for the assault cannon, but the greenstuff I ordered never showed, so I'm a bit lost on how to proceed with the various conversions. Also wondering what the best way to get a skull and iron halo onto the sergeants banner.

Hey, awesome, more Sons of Medusa. Great work, and I second all pieces of advice in the above posts.

The conversion work on the dreadnought is proceeding decently well, although since I only got one sprue of the venerable dreadnought, I cannot attach the arms properly. I mostly finished my modification to the Assault Cannon arm.

I am exceedingly pleased with how well it turned out.
I decided to put a TL Autocannon on the other arm, and work on that is proceeding, although I am at a bit of an impass due to lack of bits. I have no idea how it will attach to the dreadnought at the moment, because I don't have any of the venerable dread's backing plates. However, so far I am also decently pleased with the results, although it needs tips for the barrels and probably something at the base of the barrels as well.

The sentinel legs are about halfway completed, I don't have any greenstuff yet so I am waiting on mating the dread waist to the sentinel waist, but I got some armor plating added to the legs, so they aren't quite as spindly.
